That is a critical judgment, not a consensus measurement: the sequel’s visual and audio immersion is a major strength, while its story and familiar combat and puzzle design drew criticism for not developing alongside the spectacle.
What changed from the first Hellblade?
The sequel moves Senua’s story to Viking-era Iceland. Her immediate purpose has widened: she pursues a new quest to oppose tyranny and stop other people from suffering the kind of fate that befell Dillion. In an April 2024 Xbox Wire preview, Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews described the story as a continuation of the first game, with Senua stronger and more aware of how her psychosis manifests. Xbox Wire’s April 2024 preview explains the creative framing.
That shift matters to the title’s “less personal” verdict. The first Hellblade placed Senua’s subjective experience close to the center of its narrative. Here, the larger quest and additional characters give her more to confront, but critics differed in how well those elements served her personal story.
Why some critics call it more spectacle than story
The world is a major achievement
PC Gamer’s Robin Valentine praised the Icelandic landscapes, created with photogrammetry, while arguing that the sequel’s expanded dark-fantasy setting weakens the connection between Senua’s psychosis and the story. Valentine characterized the experience as a sequence of cinematic scenes and lightly interactive set pieces, interspersed with mild puzzles and sword fights, and found some supporting-character arcs incomplete or abandoned. The review’s standfirst called the game “Visually spectacular but narratively limp.” That is one critic’s assessment, not an objective description of the experience. Read PC Gamer’s review.

The cast and gameplay drew separate criticism
Gene Park’s review for The Washington Post also praised the game’s presentation, including its character rendering, but argued that the sequel regresses from the first game. Park criticized the reduced combat mechanics and perspective puzzles that felt smaller and insufficiently evolved, and judged the original’s treatment of psychosis more effective. Read The Washington Post’s review.
These critiques point to a connected trade-off: cinematic scale can make the journey feel vivid, yet a broader plot and cast can leave less room for Senua’s private experience. Whether that feels like purposeful expansion or a loss of focus depends on what a player valued in the first game.

What the spectacle does well
The visual ambition is not just a matter of bigger scenery. In Ninja Theory’s May 21, 2024 launch statement, Matthews said the Icelandic locations were recreated using satellite data and photogrammetry, and that character animation began with real movement from performers. Those methods help explain why critics singled out the environments and character presentation. The game’s cinematic staging is an essential part of its identity, even for players who find that it sometimes leaves too little room for interaction.
The audio presentation is another reason to play with headphones. Ninja Theory explicitly recommends them, and Matthews’ launch message invites players to turn down the lights and put them on. That recommendation supports the intended listening experience; it is not a claim that a particular brand or model is necessary. See the official game page.

How the game portrays Senua’s psychosis
Ninja Theory says it worked with neuroscience and lived-experience collaborators to understand what living with psychosis can be like. Matthews wrote that their support gave the team an opportunity to understand the experience “in the hope that Senua feels like a real person going through a very personal mental health journey.” That statement describes the developer’s intent; it is not an independent clinical evaluation. Read the May 2024 launch statement.
The game combines Senua’s subjective perspective with a mythic setting. Those are narrative and artistic choices, not grounds to treat psychosis as a supernatural power or the story as a clinical account. Reviewers’ disagreement concerns how successfully the sequel keeps Senua’s interior experience at the heart of its expanded adventure.

Is Hellblade II more like a movie than a game?
It is deliberately cinematic, with extended scenes and set pieces that prioritize mood and presentation. PC Gamer’s description of lightly interactive sequences and the Washington Post’s criticism of limited combat and puzzle development capture why some players may find the balance too passive. Others may welcome the controlled pacing and immersive staging. The central question is whether the story and atmosphere hold your attention when the game gives you less mechanical variety than a more action-focused adventure.
Is Hellblade II worth playing?
Consider it if you want a focused, atmospheric journey, value high-end visual and audio presentation, and are comfortable with cinematic pacing and a relatively restrained set of combat and puzzle activities. Approach it more cautiously if the first game’s close connection to Senua’s inner experience, or its combat and puzzle design, was the main reason you enjoyed it: the two cited reviews found those areas less compelling in the sequel.
