In Owlcat Games’ Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader CRPG, armor trades some Dodge potential for damage mitigation. Deflection reduces incoming damage by a flat amount, while the percentage-based armor stat reduces the remaining damage; lighter armor generally offers a better Dodge Chance. The best choice depends on the character, the item’s requirements and effects, and the current game version—not on armor class alone.
What armor does in Rogue Trader
Armor is one part of a layered defense, not a substitute for every other defensive stat. Owlcat’s Beta Guide describes Deflection as a flat reduction to incoming damage, followed by Armor’s percentage reduction. The earlier Alpha Guide calls that percentage-based stat “Absorption” and says lighter armor gives a higher Dodge Chance.

The terminology differs between those official guides. Check your character and item tooltips and use the name and values shown in your current game version; do not assume the labels are identical across versions.
How to choose armor for a character
Start with how the character avoids or withstands attacks. A character whose defense relies on Dodge may benefit from lighter armor’s better Dodge profile. If a character expects to be hit, stronger mitigation may be more useful, provided the armor’s requirements and Dodge cost fit the build. Neither approach is universally superior.
#1 Best Overall
- The new Rulebook focuses on the Gilead System, allowing you to tell your own stories in a society beset by daemonic invasion and internal corruption
- Character Creation has been streamlined, with a focus on Frameworks. With so many choices of who and what you can play, you’ll want to decide the focus of your game early
- The Factions Chapter is a primer on life in the 41st Millennium, detailing each of the organisations vying for supremacy in the Warp-torn Gilead System

- Check mitigation: Compare the item’s current Deflection and percentage-based armor values in its tooltip.
- Check Dodge: Look at the character’s Dodge Chance with the armor equipped, rather than assuming a fixed penalty applies to every character.
- Check restrictions: Armor can require a talent or other condition, and some equipment is restricted by character. Owlcat’s official guide gives Aeldari armor as an example; confirm the item and character screens before planning around it.
- Weigh special effects: Decide whether an item’s effect supports the character’s role enough to justify its defensive tradeoff.
- Compare like with like: Keep game version, DLC, difficulty, and campaign point consistent when evaluating alternatives.
Light, medium, heavy, and power armor
Community armor references use the classes Light, Medium, Heavy, and Power and describe Dodge penalties and talent requirements for heavier classes. Treat those descriptions as a starting point, not a universal numerical rule: the exact item, character, and current tooltip matter. A heavier class is not automatically better if its requirements or Dodge cost undermine the build.
For an item-specific example, the community armor reference lists an Adaptive Flak Vest with a combat-start bonus. Because equipment and loot have been rebalanced, verify such effects in game before relying on them.
Rank #2
Why item rankings can go stale
Owlcat’s Update 1.3 notes document a rebalance of Act I–II equipment and loot tables, as well as fixes involving specific armor and Deflection-related equipment. That establishes that item behavior has changed over time; it does not establish that every item value or ranking elsewhere reflects the latest build. Treat “best armor” lists as version- and build-specific, not timeless answers.
Quick Recap
A quick armor comparison
- Read both items’ tooltips in your current game version.
- Equip each in turn and compare the character’s resulting Dodge Chance and defensive values.
- Confirm the character meets every listed requirement and can use any special effect.
- Judge the choice against that character’s role and the attacks they need to survive.
