Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor an approachable Rogue PvE build, start with Assassination Mutilate. Choose Saber Slash when you can maintain its damage-over-time effect, or Backstab for short-lived dungeon targets where slower ramp-up has less time to pay off. These recommendations reflect Wowhead’s Phase 8, Patch 1.15.8 guides, updated April–May 2025—not independently verified live balance for October 2026.
How to choose a Rogue PvE build
Rogue is a strong melee damage option in the cited overview, but it is not presented as universally top-ranked; its multi-target damage is comparatively weaker. The overview describes Mutilate, Saber Slash, and Backstab as viable PvE choices, with output often close across phases. That is the guide author’s broad characterization, not a fresh comparison from current raid logs.
| Build | Best fit | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Mutilate | A straightforward starting build and sustained PvE encounters | Builds combo points with Mutilate and prioritizes keeping Slice and Dice active. |
| Saber Slash | Encounters where you can keep its damage-over-time effect running | Apply and maintain three stacks; its slower pace rewards targets that live long enough for the effect to contribute. |
| Backstab | Dungeons with short-lived enemies | Less ramp-up than the other two, but the builds guide says it is less competitive in lower-gear raid contexts. |
Build choice also depends on target count and lifetime, available weapons, gear level, relevant set bonuses, and whether your group supports a rune that relies on teammates. There is no single rune sheet or gear list that fits every encounter.
How to play Mutilate
Combo points and finishers
Use Mutilate to build combo points when you have three or fewer, then use a finisher at four or five. Prioritize Slice and Dice, followed by Crimson Tempest, then Envenom once the other effects are active. Use Poisoned Knife only when Mutilate or a finisher is unavailable. This is the sample priority in the overview, not a guarantee of the best action for every encounter.

Phase 8 set-specific talent setup
The Phase 8 builds guide says Scarlet Enclave gear shifts Mutilate somewhat toward raw Mutilate damage. In that guide’s setup, switch to its Scarlet Enclave talent build after obtaining at least four Duskwraith Armor pieces. Treat that threshold as specific to the guide’s Phase 8 recommendation, not a timeless rule for other patches or gear configurations.
How to play Saber Slash
The Phase 8 build guide describes Saber Slash as a slower-paced option that combines its damage-over-time effect with poison damage through Deadly Brew and Envenom. Apply three Saber Slash stacks quickly, maintain Slice and Dice, and spend remaining combo points on Envenom. If enemies die before the damage-over-time effect has time to contribute, the build’s setup may be less useful than Backstab’s shorter ramp-up.

When Backstab makes sense
The builds guide recommends Backstab as a dungeon option because it needs less ramp-up than Mutilate or Saber Slash. Short-lived enemies may die before stacking effects pay off. Do not extend that dungeon advantage to every raid: the guide says Backstab is less competitive in lower-gear raid contexts and uses different talent setups for lower and very high gear.
Choose runes for your group and encounter
- Honor Among Thieves: The Phase 8 rune guide considers it strong in a capable group and weaker solo or with weaker teammates, because its value depends on group activity.
- Focused Attacks: The guide favors it for Backstab builds. It also pairs it with Fan of Knives as a situational option against multiple enemies.
- Combat Potency: The guide notes it can be useful when playing solo.
- Crimson Tempest: The guide calls it useful in raids when at least two targets will survive for the bleed to run its course.
These are encounter and group-context recommendations from the Phase 8 guide, not a universal ranking of runes.

Which stats and gear matter?
The overview’s stat priority is attack power, agility, critical strike chance, hit chance, strength, then stamina. Attack power and agility are leading damage stats; stamina helps you survive rather than directly increasing damage. The Phase 8 gear guide also highlights hit and critical strike, and advises comparing an item’s total useful stats rather than overvaluing one stat in isolation.
Gear recommendations are conditional on phase, build, gear level, and set bonuses. The Phase 8 gear guide notes that the Scarlet Enclave introduced new items and set bonuses, and that recommendations could change as those items were adjusted. Recheck its list against the actual items and bonuses available to your character rather than treating “best in slot” as a permanent answer.

What these recommendations establish—and what they do not
The cited class overview and build and gear guides identify Phase 8 and Patch 1.15.8; their listed update dates are April 6, May 11, and April 8, 2025, respectively. They provide a useful Phase 8 framework, but do not establish current October 2026 balance, present-day encounter rankings, or current raid-log performance. The retrieved Phase 8 ranking result placed Rogue in A tier for a launch-week Scarlet Enclave snapshot and warned that rankings shift with gear and fight duration. That snapshot is not a universal or current tier verdict.
Blizzard’s Season of Discovery launch announcement explains the rune-engraving concept and the original level 25 cap. Its Phase 4 announcement records that phase’s increase of the level cap from 50 to 60 and its added content. Both are historical context, not confirmation of the current phase.
