There is no verified “best” Rust graphics preset or guaranteed FPS increase for every PC. Start by checking Facepunch’s current requirements, then identify whether your system is more likely limited by its CPU or GPU. Change one setting at a time and compare the same kind of game scene before deciding whether hardware is the issue.
Establish a repeatable baseline first
Before changing settings, note your usual frame rate and describe when it drops: for example, while looking across a busy base, entering a populated area, or holding a weapon. Compare like with like—a similar location, view direction, and level of activity—because different Rust scenes can place very different demands on a PC. Change one graphics option at a time, then revisit a comparable scene. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped rather than relying on a single unusually good or bad moment.
There is no source-supported universal preset, launch-option list, or setting-by-setting FPS gain for current versions. Avoid treating copied settings recipes as guaranteed fixes.
Check your PC against Facepunch’s requirements
Facepunch’s published requirements list the following example configurations. They are a useful baseline, not a promise that every listed part will deliver identical performance.

| Requirement | Minimum examples | Recommended examples |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-6700K |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 470, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, or Intel Arc A580 | AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, or Intel Arc B580 |
| Storage | 45 GB; SSD highly recommended | 45 GB; SSD required |
These are Facepunch’s currently published examples; check the Rust requirements page in case it has changed. Meeting the minimum does not mean every scene will run at a particular frame rate, and falling below a listed example is a reason to investigate compatibility and performance rather than assume one specific component is at fault.
Work out whether the CPU or GPU is limiting performance
The GPU renders the image; the CPU handles game logic and other work that can become demanding in Rust’s active scenes. If the GPU is the limiting factor, reducing graphics quality or resolution can reduce its workload. If the CPU is the limiting factor, lowering resolution may do little because it does not remove the CPU’s work.

Facepunch’s 2018 Performance Update described a historical goal: “Our goal for this patch was 50-60 fps at 1920×1080 on a GTX 1060 (3GB) with default settings.” That was a goal for that patch, not a current guarantee for that graphics card or other PCs. Facepunch has also discussed CPU bottlenecks in tested configurations and cautioned that a GPU upgrade might not improve performance. Its historical Industrial Update comparison reported a Ryzen 7 5800X3D averaging 50% faster than a Ryzen 9 5950X in that test; this is not a current, universal CPU ranking.
Use resolution as a diagnostic, not a magic fix
Try a lower resolution briefly in a comparable scene. If performance improves noticeably, that points toward a GPU limitation. If it changes little, the GPU may not be the main constraint; this simple comparison is only a clue, not a definitive diagnosis. A graphics card purchase is most relevant when the existing card is below Facepunch’s examples or evidence points to a GPU limit.

Adjust graphics settings incrementally
- Record the current result. Use a familiar scene and note the frame rate and settings you are starting from.
- Change one option. Start with graphics quality or resolution if you suspect the GPU is limiting performance. Avoid changing several options at once, or you will not know which change mattered.
- Repeat the comparison. Return to a similar scene and compare under roughly similar conditions. Keep a change only if it improves the result without an unacceptable visual trade-off.
- Check the current menu. Rust updates can move settings. Facepunch’s Shipshape update placed shadow configuration in a Shadow Quality preset under Graphics Quality and moved Max Shadow Lights to Rendering. If your client’s labels or layout differ, use the current in-game menu rather than relying on an older guide.
Facepunch’s Shipshape update documents those menu changes. They do not establish that one particular shadow preset is optimal for every system.
Do not confuse faster loading with higher FPS
An SSD is relevant if Rust takes longer than average to load or if you need to meet the recommended storage requirement. Facepunch’s note about SSDs concerns loading, not a guaranteed increase in in-game frame rate.

Facepunch Studios’ 2025 Harder Core update reported desktop-to-server loading up to 65% quicker and memory use reduced by 10–20% after a loading refactor; results vary. Those are developer-reported changes from that update, not a prediction for an individual PC or a guarantee for later builds. The update also said the experimental Optimized Loading option had been removed because the new optimization replaced it. See the Harder Core update for the update’s qualifications.

Decide what to upgrade only after diagnosing the limit
- Consider a GPU only if it fits the evidence. It may be relevant if your current graphics card is below Facepunch’s published examples or a resolution comparison suggests a GPU limit. It is not a guaranteed fix for low FPS.
- Do not buy a GPU to solve a suspected CPU limit. Facepunch’s historical testing warns that a graphics-card upgrade may produce no improvement when the CPU is the constraint.
- Consider an SSD for loading or requirements compliance. Its cited benefit is loading-related; the requirements page does not establish that it raises in-game FPS.
- Compare the whole system with the requirements. CPU, memory, graphics, operating system, and storage all matter to whether your configuration aligns with Facepunch’s minimum or recommended examples.
Make the smallest change that matches the likely bottleneck, then repeat the same-scene comparison. If the evidence does not point to a GPU limit, a GPU purchase is not a diagnosis.
