Roblox’s 18+ restriction is a rating limit on certain games, not a new minimum age for using Roblox. Age-checked players aged 16–17 can use the platform but cannot play experiences rated Restricted (18+); users aged 18 and older can access the full game catalog. Chat has a separate requirement: Roblox says users must complete an age check to use chat wherever the feature is available.
What are Roblox’s new 18+ restrictions?
Roblox’s Restricted (18+) label applies to a category of experiences that users younger than 18 cannot access. It does not make Roblox an adults-only platform or block all younger players. Roblox’s May 20, 2026 account guide says age-checked users aged 16 and older can access the broader catalog, except for Restricted experiences; users aged 18 and older can access all games. Roblox Support likewise lists 16- and 17-year-olds as unable to play 18+ games and users 18 and older as having full game access. Roblox’s account guide and Roblox Support describe the current age-based access rules.
Roblox announced facial age checks for chat on November 18, 2025. After an initial voluntary period and enforcement in select markets in early December, the company said on January 7, 2026, that age checks were rolling out globally wherever chat was available. Roblox said the system supports age-based chat and limits communication between adults and children younger than 16. This chat rule and the Restricted game rating are separate measures, even though both use age categories.
How Roblox’s age groups affect games and communication
Roblox’s May 2026 guide describes three broad account experiences. The exact availability of features and parental controls can depend on region, account settings and rollout status.

| Age group | Games and maturity labels | Chat and controls |
|---|---|---|
| Roblox Kids, ages 5–8 | Catalog limited to games rated Minimal or Mild, with expanded review. Restricted (18+) experiences are not available. | Chat is disabled by default. A linked parent can allow in-game chat. |
| Roblox Select, ages 9–15 | Can access games rated Minimal, Mild or Moderate. Restricted (18+) experiences are not available. | Chat availability and parental controls vary by age and region; an age check is required to use chat where available. |
| Age-checked users, ages 16–17 | Can access the broader catalog except Restricted (18+) experiences. | Chat requires an age check. Communication features can vary by settings and region. |
| Age-checked users, ages 18+ | Can access the full game catalog, including Restricted (18+) experiences. | Chat requires an age check where available; communication features can vary by settings and region. |
The age bands and game categories are drawn from Roblox’s May 2026 account guide and its current Support explanation. An age label on a game should not be confused with a guarantee about a player’s age or the effectiveness of moderation.
Do you need an age check to chat on Roblox?
Yes. Roblox says users must complete an age check to use chat wherever chat is available. The company described a global rollout on January 7, 2026, but feature access can still depend on region and account settings. The age check is for communication access; it is not the same as the 18+ rating gate for games.

Does Roblox require a face scan?
Roblox lists facial age estimation and government ID verification as age-check methods. Facial estimation uses a device camera; it does not mean users must buy a separate camera. ID verification is available only to users aged 13 or older. The available route may depend on the account and circumstances. See Roblox Support’s age-check guidance for current instructions.
Roblox says selfie images and video are deleted after processing. That is the company’s statement about its handling of age-check media, not an independent privacy audit. Roblox also reports a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18, citing tests by the UK Age Check Certification Scheme. This is a company-reported average error, not a promise that every individual estimate is correct.

What happens if Roblox gets your age wrong?
Roblox says it may ask users to repeat an age check if its systems detect a discrepancy. It describes several possible correction routes, but they differ by age and situation:
- Eligible users can verify their age with government ID.
- A linked parent can correct some minors’ age information.
- Users estimated to be 18 or older have a one-time reset option, according to Roblox’s May 2026 guidance.
These options are not interchangeable or available to every account. Check Roblox Support’s current guidance for the applicable correction steps.

Why did Roblox add the measures, and what do they prove?
The changes followed criticism and lawsuits over child safety, as the Associated Press reported in November 2025. Roblox’s annual filing also acknowledges that users may evade age checks or be misclassified, which can expose them to inappropriate content or restricted features. The filing discusses negative media coverage and litigation allegations; it is a corporate disclosure, not an independent finding about the policy’s effectiveness.
The announcements establish what Roblox says it rolled out and how the company says its systems work. They do not establish that the rules have reduced grooming, exploitation or other harms. Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman and Vice President of User and Discovery Product Rajiv Bhatia acknowledged limits in their January 7 announcement: “While no system (including Roblox) is perfect and we cannot prevent all objectionable content from appearing on Roblox, we do our best to detect and moderate content that violates our Community Standards and make it easy for users to report anything they do spot.”
