Roblox sought $1.65 million from YouTuber Ruben Sim in a 2021 lawsuit, but that was the company’s requested damages—not the amount ultimately ordered. In January 2022, the court approved a stipulated resolution entering a $150,000 judgment and imposing a permanent injunction. The case ended without a trial verdict on each allegation.
Why did Roblox sue Ruben Sim?
Roblox Corporation filed its complaint against Benjamin Robert Simon, who uses the online name Ruben Sim, on November 23, 2021, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The company alleged that Simon, after being banned from Roblox, circumvented access restrictions and encouraged others to do so. It also accused him of harassment and abusive conduct toward users and Roblox personnel, as well as making false or misleading threats associated with the 2021 Roblox Developers Conference. These were claims in Roblox’s complaint, not findings reached after a trial. Roblox’s complaint, reproduced by JURIST
What were the “terrorist threats” about?
Roblox’s complaint said its Developers Conference took place in San Francisco from October 14 to 16, 2021. It alleged that posts by Simon and others prompted concern, leading police and private security to search the site and the conference to be temporarily locked down. Roblox also claimed the incident caused more than $50,000 in security and investigation expenses. Those details and the cost figure are Roblox’s account in its pleading, rather than a court’s independent finding. Complaint reproduced by JURIST
Was Roblox awarded $1.65 million?
No. Roblox requested $1.65 million in damages in its 2021 complaint; the final stipulated judgment entered in January 2022 was $150,000. The complaint described the requested amount as at least $150,000 in actual damages plus $1.5 million in punitive damages. The judgment amount was therefore distinct from the original demand. What did the court order?
The parties submitted a proposed stipulated order on January 14, 2022, and the court approved it on January 20. The order states that it resolves the matters in dispute, enters judgment for Roblox for $150,000, and permanently restrains Simon from making or republishing false terrorist threats relating to Roblox, knowingly making false factual statements about Roblox, or glamorizing or encouraging violence against Roblox, its employees, or facilities. It also sets terms concerning access to the Roblox platform and proximity to Roblox facilities; the order contains the full conditions. A stipulated order is a resolution agreed to by the parties and approved by the court. This case did not go to trial, so the outcome should not be described as a jury verdict or as a judicial finding that every accusation in Roblox’s complaint was true. The court-approved judgment and injunction are the concrete outcome; the complaint’s broader account remains allegations by Roblox.
