If Routine crashes on Xbox Series X or Series S, try the eight steps below, starting with the least disruptive. They are general Xbox troubleshooting steps, not confirmed fixes for a known Routine-specific crash bug. No Routine-specific Xbox crash report or official crash fix is established by the available sources.
Routine, a first-person sci-fi horror game by Lunar Software and Raw Fury, launched on Xbox on December 4, 2025. Xbox identifies it as optimized for Series X|S. Those facts confirm the game is intended for these consoles; they do not establish that a crash is caused by the game, the console, or a particular fault.
Square Enix Limited Support offers general Xbox crash advice, saying, “If your game crashes, please try the steps below to resolve the issue.” That article is not a statement from Routine’s publisher. Use the sequence here as general troubleshooting, not as a guaranteed or tested Routine fix.
Try these 8 steps, from quick checks to escalation
1. Fully quit and relaunch Routine
Open the Xbox guide, highlight Routine, open its options, and choose Quit. Then launch it again. This clears the current running session; it is a low-effort first check, not a Routine-specific recommendation.

2. Check for game and console updates
Look for an available update for Routine in your Xbox game library, and check the console’s update settings for a system update. Install available updates, then try the game again. Square Enix’s general Xbox troubleshooting guidance also recommends ensuring console updates are installed.
3. Power cycle the Xbox
Save and close anything else you have open, then fully shut down the console. Square Enix’s general guidance describes holding the console’s power button for ten seconds, unplugging the power cable, waiting ten seconds, reconnecting it, and starting the console again. Console prompts and controls can vary; follow the instructions for your model if they differ.

4. Check the console’s ventilation
Make sure the Xbox is in a well-ventilated space and that its vents are not blocked. Square Enix’s support guidance recommends a well-ventilated location. A crash alone does not show that the console is overheating.
5. Clear the Xbox Series X|S cache
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s Series X|S instructions are to shut down the console, unplug it for two minutes, reconnect it, and power it on. Rockstar says this process does not affect saved games, but it resets brightness and language settings.

6. Reinstall Routine
If the simpler checks have not helped, uninstall Routine and reinstall it from your Xbox library or the store. This is a general troubleshooting step, not a proven cure for corrupted game data. Do not choose an option to delete saved data as part of this step.
7. Check whether other games crash too
Try another game and note whether it also crashes. If several games are affected, or the console itself shuts down, contact Xbox device support for help investigating the console. That pattern is a reason to seek support, not proof of a hardware fault.

8. Report a Routine-only crash
If Routine still crashes after these checks but other games work, report the problem to the game publisher through its verified support route, and contact Xbox support if you need console-side help. Include whether you have a Series X or Series S, what happens (for example, a return to the dashboard or a full shutdown), and when it happens. Do not treat a generic support article from another publisher as an official Routine fix.
