That casting has since changed: Amazon’s current series overview names Dave Bautista as Kratos, and Variety reported Bautista’s appointment after Hurst’s departure.
Ryan Hurst’s original casting—and what changed
Amazon MGM Studios announced Hurst as Kratos in January 2026. The announcement was notable for fans of the games because Hurst had already appeared in the series: he voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök. Amazon MGM’s original casting announcement confirms his initial role, while PC Gamer’s report notes his earlier performance as Thor.
In July 2026, Variety reported that the role was being recast after Hurst was injured on set. In August, Variety reported that Dave Bautista was officially set to play Kratos. Amazon’s current series overview also lists Bautista. The injury and production-timing explanation comes from Variety’s reporting; it is not presented as a direct studio statement. See Variety’s July report and its August casting report.
What the Prime Video series is about
The adaptation follows Kratos and his 10-year-old son, Atreus, as they travel to spread the ashes of their wife and mother. Amazon describes the relationship as a two-way lesson: “Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
