On September 5, 2024, SAG-AFTRA announced that 80 video games had signed union agreements containing AI protections the union was seeking during its video-game strike. The figure counted games covered by agreements—not 80 titles named in a public roster—and the agreements included interim and tiered-budget arrangements.
What the 80-game announcement meant
SAG-AFTRA’s announcement described a milestone in its strike against video-game employers: 80 games had signed union agreements with the AI protections performers were seeking. The union did not publish a verified list of all 80 titles in the announcement, and the count should not be treated as a list of 80 individually identified games. SAG-AFTRA’s September 5 announcement also does not establish that every agreement used identical language or contained identical terms.
The agreements included interim and tiered-budget arrangements. They were agreements associated with individual games or companies, rather than the later industry-wide Interactive Media Agreement negotiated with the major video-game employers’ bargaining group.
What AI protections were involved?
The 2024 announcement said the agreements included the AI protections SAG-AFTRA was seeking, but it did not provide the executed text of every agreement or enumerate each clause. It is therefore not possible to use that announcement alone to specify the consent, compensation, or other terms in every one of the 80 agreements.

A named example came the day before the 80-game announcement: SAG-AFTRA said Lightspeed L.A. would produce current and future games, including Last Sentinel, under an Interim Interactive Media Agreement. That announcement shows one project covered by an interim agreement; it does not establish that Last Sentinel was the only project, or a representative one, among the 80. SAG-AFTRA’s Lightspeed L.A. announcement identifies the agreement and project.
How the number changed—and what happened to the strike
- September 4, 2024: SAG-AFTRA announced the Lightspeed L.A. agreement, covering games including Last Sentinel.
- September 5, 2024: The union said 80 games had signed agreements during the strike.
- October 22, 2024: SAG-AFTRA reported that more than 120 games from 49 companies had signed interim or tiered-budget agreements, which it said carried foundational AI protections. The union’s October update reflects a later count, not a corrected roster of the original 80.
- June 2025: SAG-AFTRA announced National Board approval of a tentative Interactive Media Agreement with the video-game bargaining group. The union described informed-consent requirements for various AI uses and the ability to suspend informed consent for Digital Replica use during a strike. Its June announcement concerns this later negotiated agreement.
- July 2025: SAG-AFTRA members ratified the Interactive Media Agreement by 95.04% to 4.96%. The union said ratification concluded the strike, which had been suspended pending the vote. The ratification announcement gives the vote result and strike status.
How the 2024 agreements differ from the 2025 deal
| Agreement context | Scope and signatories | What the union said about AI |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 interim or tiered-budget agreements | Individual games or companies; 80 games reported on September 5, 2024, rising to more than 120 games from 49 companies by October 22, 2024. | The union said the agreements carried the AI protections it was seeking; it later described the protections in the interim and tiered-budget agreements as foundational. The cited announcements do not establish identical clause text for every agreement. |
| 2025 Interactive Media Agreement | A tentative agreement between SAG-AFTRA and the video-game bargaining group, approved by members in July 2025. | The union described informed-consent requirements for various AI uses and the ability to suspend informed consent for Digital Replica use during a strike. |
The 2025 terms should not be read backward as a complete description of every 2024 interim or tiered-budget agreement. They belong to a later negotiated agreement with a different scope.
