SEGA described Sonic Blitz as a mobile collectible card game built around quick, one-on-one battles. A June 2025 report also cited datamined character references that prompted one fan to compare its apparent depth to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate—but neither that comparison nor the reported references confirm the game’s final roster.
What SEGA said Sonic Blitz is
Insider Gaming reported on June 3, 2025, that Sonic Blitz was a mobile-only collectible card game developed by Rovio. The report reproduced SEGA’s description of the game as follows:
“Sonic Blitz is a collectible card game with an emphasis on lightning-fast gameplay that is easy to jump into at any time. Sonic Blitz draws on the rich roster of characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe to create a diverse pool of cards that players can collect, upgrade, and assemble into strategic decks to take on opponents in fast-paced one-on-one battles that unfold in a matter of minutes.”
The quotation is attributed to SEGA as reproduced by Insider Gaming; no individual SEGA speaker is named. Its description establishes the basic format—collectible, upgradeable cards assembled into decks for short head-to-head matches—but does not give detailed rules or confirm a complete card or character roster.

What the reported character references show—and what they do not
Insider Gaming said dataminers examining game files had found character references including The Conductor, Modern Mighty, Lanolin, Bean, Holo-Lynx, Tangle, and Honey the Cat. These are examples reported from files, not a confirmed final list of playable characters or cards. The report does not establish the total roster size, whether every reference will appear in the released game, or how any of these characters would play.
Those names help explain why the roster drew attention: they span a range of recognizable Sonic characters and variations. But a file reference alone does not establish that a character is finished, obtainable, or intended for the final release.

Why people called it “Smash Ultimate” levels of deep
The phrase came from an X user reacting to the reported references: “this is literally the Smash Ultimate of the Sonic series.” It is a fan’s impression, not SEGA’s wording, a measured comparison, or evidence of a particular roster size. Insider Gaming’s report presents the comparison in the context of the purported file references; it does not establish that Sonic Blitz will match Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in scope.

Insider Gaming reported that the game was in a limited technical launch in the Philippines on June 3, 2025, and said a worldwide deployment was expected after testing. That is a dated account of the test and the plan at the time, not confirmation that a global release later occurred. The report does not establish current availability, supported regions, or a later launch date.
