Neil Patrick Harris was announced as the voice of Deadpool in Marvel’s Deadpool VR, and Ryan Reynolds responded with a mock-outraged video—not a real complaint or casting dispute. The joke turns Harris’s new role into a playful “theft” of Reynolds’s signature character and sends him back to the television persona that made him famous.
What Ryan Reynolds said about Neil Patrick Harris voicing Deadpool
In a deliberately comic video responding to the Deadpool VR announcement, Reynolds pretends to be upset that Harris has taken on the character. “People who steal your signature role are the biggest buttholes of all,” he says, before praising Harris as “an amazing actor with the nurturing voice of an angel.” The mock grievance is the bit: the video does not describe a genuine dispute. The Independent’s June 9, 2025 account quotes both lines in that comic context.
How the video turns the casting news into a joke
A Doogie Howser parody
Rather than present the exchange as a serious confrontation, Reynolds plays up Harris’s Doogie Howser, M.D. image. He appears in a lab coat and glasses, evoking Harris’s breakout role as a young doctor. Reynolds frames the response as a mock diary entry about the news; Robyn Lively then interrupts, calling him “vindictive and stupid,” according to The Independent. Lively also appeared in Doogie Howser and is Blake Lively’s half-sister.
GamesRadar+ identifies the video as “Ryan Over-Reacts to Marvel’s Deadpool VR” and describes it as 85 seconds long. The joke depends on the contrast between Harris’s new voice role and Reynolds’s familiar association with Deadpool—not on one actor replacing the other.

What Deadpool VR is—and what the announcement established
Harris was announced as the voice of Deadpool for Marvel’s Deadpool VR, an original Deadpool story announced for Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S. GameSpot’s June 6, 2025 announcement coverage described shooting, stabbing, and parkour among the game’s gameplay elements. Those are announcement-era details; the cited coverage does not establish the game’s current availability, price, or compatibility as of October 8, 2026.
