These are general Valve troubleshooting steps, not a confirmed Black Ops III-specific fix; the cause can vary, and no single solution is established for every Deck crash.
First, note when and how the crash happens
Before changing settings, identify the failure pattern. Does the game close during launch, at a particular mission or cutscene, when opening a mode, or only after playing for a while? Does only the game exit, or does the whole Deck restart? Record the mode—Campaign, Multiplayer, or Zombies—and the exact point where the problem occurs. These details help you compare later tests and give support something concrete to investigate; none of these symptoms alone identifies a confirmed Black Ops III cause.
Update SteamOS, restart, and close third-party apps
- Press the Steam button and open Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install any available updates, then restart the Deck.
- Exit or disable third-party applications you installed through Desktop Mode, then launch Black Ops III and see whether the same crash recurs.
Valve lists updating, restarting, and disabling third-party applications among its general Steam Deck software troubleshooting steps. See the Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide. These checks are quick and reversible, and they remove common software variables without changing the game installation.
Verify Black Ops III’s installed files
- Open your Steam Library and select Call of Duty: Black Ops III.
- Open Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam complete the check, which may take several minutes, then retry the same part of the game.
Steam says file verification can help when a game crashes or content is missing. Its support page notes that one or more files may fail to validate normally because local configuration files can differ. Read Valve’s Verify Integrity of Game Files instructions for the tool’s details.

Test Proton and graphics settings one change at a time
Try the latest Proton compatibility tool
- On the game’s Library page, open Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose the latest Proton version available.
- Launch the game and retest the same crash point. If the result is unchanged, note the selected Proton version before trying another adjustment.
Valve’s general Steam Deck guidance says, “Try choosing the latest version of Proton.” The same guide warns that forcing a compatibility tool can cause Steam to download a Windows build when only a Linux version is installed, so allow for a download before testing. This recommendation does not establish that a particular Proton version fixes current Black Ops III crashes.
Lower graphics settings
If the game launches but crashes during play, reduce the graphics preset or lower individual graphics settings, then repeat the same section. Change one setting or group at a time where practical; that makes it easier to tell whether a graphics adjustment affected the failure. Valve includes lowering graphics settings among its general Steam Deck troubleshooting suggestions, but that is not a game-specific diagnosis.

Valve says Steam Deck performance targets and compatibility ratings apply to both LCD and OLED models. That does not guarantee identical behavior for every game crash, software version, or individual Deck. See the Steam Deck troubleshooting guide.
Check the game’s compatibility listing without assuming its rating
Valve uses four Steam Deck compatibility labels: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Store and Library details can show which Verified requirements a game does not meet. Check the live Black Ops III Store listing for its current rating rather than relying on an older post or inferring a rating from community reports. Steam lists Treyarch as the developer, Activision as the publisher, and November 5, 2015 as the game’s release date. Its technical-support listing gives a Windows minimum of 100 GB free storage. That is a Windows requirement, not evidence that a Steam Deck crash is caused by storage or a diagnosis of Deck compatibility. See Steam’s Black Ops III technical-issue listing.

Valve’s general launch guidance recommends checking the operating system, game files, nonessential applications, and system requirements, then contacting the game’s support team if common steps fail. It does not identify a universal Black Ops III crash cause. See Steam’s guide for games that do not run after “Preparing to Launch”.

When you contact Steam Support and Activision’s game support route, include these details:
- Your SteamOS version and whether the Deck is an LCD or OLED model.
- The Proton version selected, if you forced one.
- Whether the crash occurs in Campaign, Multiplayer, or Zombies, and the exact point of failure.
- Whether the game alone closes or the Deck restarts.
- Whether file verification found or repaired anything, and which troubleshooting changes you tested.
Community discussions include reports of Deck freezes and crashes, but those posts are anecdotal: they do not establish how common the issue is, a current compatibility status, or a universal remedy. One post dated November 22, 2023 describes an unofficial BOIII client workaround on SteamOS 3.5.5, while also noting slow launch and raising concerns about online play. That account is not an official, current, or safety-validated fix; it is not a routine troubleshooting recommendation.
