- Role: Are you hosting the session or joining as a client?
- Who is affected: Do all players notice the same delay or hitch, or only one person?
- Game mode: Does the issue also occur in solo play, or only in co-op?
- Symptom: Is it delayed response, disconnection, consistently low FPS, or an intermittent visual hitch?
- Setup: Record the current game version, platform and store, CPU, GPU, memory, driver version, connection type, and any relevant overlays or mods.
Keep the notes tied to one session where possible. For example, “client-only visual hitching in co-op; no similar hitch in solo play” is more useful for troubleshooting than “the game lags.”
What the official information establishes—and what it does not
Co-op requires broadband
Steam’s MechWarrior 5: Clans listing says broadband internet is needed to play and host co-op. That establishes an internet requirement, not that a particular connection, router, or cable will fix a symptom. If the problem looks like connection delay, comparing wired and Wi-Fi play can be a useful diagnostic observation where practical; it is not a guaranteed remedy.

The developer discussed performance and client stuttering in October 2024
In its October 18, 2024 Hotfix #2 preview, Piranha Games said it hoped Hotfix 1 had addressed many reported performance issues. The preview also listed further performance improvements and a fix for a co-op issue in which clients saw other players stuttering among work in progress that was not yet confirmed for Hotfix 2. This is dated evidence that the symptom had been recognized at that time; it does not confirm the status of every planned item in current versions or prove that the same issue explains a player’s present-day problem.
A February 2026 update is not evidence of a multiplayer-lag fix
Piranha Games announced an update on February 6, 2026, with deployment stated for February 10, 2026. The available announcement excerpt describes fixes, balance changes, and quality-of-life work, but does not substantiate a multiplayer-lag resolution. Do not assume that update fixed a specific lag or stuttering problem without a relevant item in the complete notes: February 2026 update announcement.

Check the PC requirements if the symptom is low FPS or local stutter
Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit and DirectX 12 among the PC requirements, and says an SSD is strongly recommended. Its listed specifications are useful context, but meeting them does not guarantee smooth multiplayer or rule out a local performance problem.

These are the hardware specifications currently stated in the Steam listing, not a promise of a particular frame rate. Check the live listing for any changes. If performance is poor in both solo and co-op, compare your system with the published requirements and record the game version before treating the problem as network lag. The listed requirements do not identify a particular graphics setting, upgrade, or tweak as a confirmed cure.

Use this troubleshooting sequence
- Describe the symptom precisely. Separate delayed responses or disconnects from low FPS and brief image hitches.
- Record who is affected and when. Note host or client role, whether teammates see the issue, and whether it occurs in solo play.
- Capture the setup. Write down the game version, platform/store, CPU, GPU, memory, driver version, connection type, and relevant overlays or mods.
- If it looks like connection delay, compare connection types if practical. A wired-versus-Wi-Fi comparison may help you gather evidence; Steam’s broadband requirement does not establish Ethernet as a fix.
- If it looks like local performance trouble, check the current game version and published PC requirements. Do not assume that a requirement check alone identifies the cause.
- Escalate a persistent issue with your observations. Steam lists [email protected] as the support contact. Include the symptom, host/client role, affected players, solo-versus-co-op comparison, game version, and PC details.
Account for platform and cross-play
Xbox Wire’s October 25, 2024 article describes cross-platform co-op and availability on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, including Game Pass offerings: Xbox Wire’s launch article. Because players may be on different platforms or store versions, record what each person is using when reporting a co-op issue. The article does not identify a specific cross-platform lag defect.
