Choose bridge officers for the activity—such as PvP or hostiles—and don’t expect ordinary officers to increase the Borg Cube Cutting Beam’s damage or charge rate. A community suggestion to put Phlox below decks for faster charging is anecdotal, not a confirmed universal build.
How to choose a Borg Cube crew
Start with what you plan to do with the player-owned Cube. The available crew recommendations are community advice, not a controlled comparison of complete lineups, so the useful approach is to select officers whose abilities suit the activity and your roster.
| Activity | How to approach the crew | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| PvP | Choose bridge officers for the ordinary player-versus-player combat you expect to do. | A community discussion identifies PvP as a distinct crew use case, but does not establish a best lineup. [Community discussion] |
| Hostiles | Use bridge abilities suited to fighting the hostiles you are targeting. | The discussion names hostiles as a separate use case; it does not test or rank crews. [Community discussion] |
| Armadas | Build for the Armada encounter and the officers available to you. | The cited crew thread does not verify a specific player-owned Cube Armada lineup. Advice for Borg Expansion Cube Armadas is a separate encounter and should not be treated as a crew guide for your own Cube. [Community discussion] [Borg Expansion Cube guide] |
What the crew positions do
In Scopely’s officer system, the officer in the Captain’s Seat activates a Captain’s Maneuver, bridge officers activate Officer Abilities, and below-deck officers use Below Deck Abilities. Officers in the same synergy group can boost the captain’s ability. These differences matter when fitting a crew to an activity; they do not override the Cutting Beam’s separate mechanics. See Scopely’s Officers Guide.
Phlox below decks: a suggestion, not a guaranteed build
One commenter recommends putting Phlox below decks for faster Beam charging. The discussion does not provide controlled testing or establish that this is a universal result. Treat it as an option to try, not a confirmed best crew—and note Scopely’s rule that current officers not specific to the Borg Cube do not affect the Beam’s charge rate.

What the Cutting Beam does—and what crew cannot change
The Cutting Beam is a ship ability, not a normal weapon attack in combat. It charges based on hull and hull-piercing damage dealt during regular combat. Once charged, it can hit eligible targets in the same system without entering ordinary combat, dealing direct hull damage that bypasses defenses. Scopely states that current officers and research not specifically for the Borg Cube do not affect the Beam’s damage or charge rate. [Scopely: Borg Cube]
- Do crew for ordinary combat: officer abilities and synergy can still matter for the combat activity you are undertaking.
- Don’t crew for a supposed Beam boost: ordinary officers and non-Cube-specific research are not a documented way to raise the Beam’s damage or charging speed.
Beam restrictions to know
- It cannot target player stations, Alliance Starbases, or Armada targets.
- It has diminishing returns against targets above your level and follows PvP brackets.
- It can be used against eligible targets in the same system without initiating ordinary combat.
These restrictions and mechanics are documented on Scopely’s Borg Cube support page.
How the Borg Cube progresses
The Cube has its own progression loop, separate from choosing a crew. Successful PvE kills with the active Beam award Technological Distinctiveness. Scopely says it can be refined into two resources for different progression paths:
| Resource | Use |
|---|---|
| Shape Memory Alloy | Borg Cube upgrades |
| Advanced Cybernetics | Borg Cube research nodes in the Ex-Borg research tree |
Faction-ship milestones also provide Borg Data Nodes for further Cube progression. Scopely describes the Cube as scaling with the power of your faction ships, with 18 tiers and 90 levels; a commander can acquire and tier up at most three Cubes. The support article does not show a publication date for those figures, so consult it in-game context for the current mechanics: Borg Cube support.

Don’t confuse your Borg Cube with a Borg Expansion Cube
A Borg Expansion Cube is an Armada target, not the player-owned Borg Cube whose crew you assign. A community guide says normal Armada crews work against Borg Expansion Cube encounters, but that advice does not establish the best crew for piloting your own Cube. [Borg Expansion Cube Armada guide]
