Sony announced the slimmer PlayStation 5 on October 10, 2023, with U.S. sales due to begin in November at select retailers and through PlayStation Direct where available. Sony did not name a specific first day of sale; it said other markets would follow in the months after the U.S. rollout. Those dates and prices describe the 2023 launch, not current stock or pricing.
When did PS5 Slim sales start?
Sony’s October 10, 2023 announcement set November 2023 as the start of U.S. availability, initially through select local retailers and direct.playstation.com where available. Which PS5 Slim versions did Sony announce?
Sony announced two configurations. One includes an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive; the Digital Edition does not include a drive, but has a port for a separately sold drive. Sony said the Digital Edition could be upgraded with that accessory, making it an option for buyers who primarily download games but may want disc playback later. Check a current accessory listing for compatibility before buying.

Sony said a horizontal stand is included. A vertical stand compatible with all PS5 models is sold separately. The Digital Edition’s separately sold Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive is the relevant add-on if you want to play discs. Sony also announced console covers for the smaller model and said additional colors were expected at the time. The launch announcement does not establish current accessory prices, listings or stock, so confirm that a product is intended for this console before ordering.
Sony described the redesign as offering “greater choice and flexibility.” That phrase was part of a promotional statement by Sid Shuman, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Senior Director of Content Communications.
