What Sandbox VR announced—and what is known about the opening
Vulcan Real Estate and Sandbox VR announced the venue on December 13, 2022, placing it at 520 Westlake near Mercer Street and Westlake Avenue North. The announcement called it Sandbox VR’s second Puget Sound venue, following the Totem Lake location in Kirkland, and projected an early-2023 opening. That was a forecast, not a confirmed opening date. A later interview recorded around the South Lake Union grand opening confirms the venue opened, but does not give its exact first public day.

The planned footprint was 6,030 square feet, with four private rooms, or “holodecks,” designed for up to six players each. These are the specifications in the 2022 announcement; they should not be taken as a current floor-plan or capacity guarantee.
How the full-body VR experience works
Rather than having players watch a screen or take turns at a console, Sandbox VR is designed around a shared, room-scale virtual experience. The 2022 announcement described players wearing VR headsets, haptic vests, backpacks and sensors on their wrists and ankles, so they could move through virtual environments and cooperate with one another. That equipment description is from the announcement and may not match the current setup in every detail.

In an interview about the South Lake Union grand opening, Sandbox VR Senior Director of Operations Bryan Price identified the headset as the HTC VIVE Focus 3 and discussed motion tracking and haptic feedback. He described the headset as eliminating the backpack tether in that setup. This is an attributed detail from that interview, not a guarantee that every present-day session uses the same hardware.

What is—and is not—settled about the opening
The announcement and later grand-opening interview establish the progression from planned venue to operating location. They do not establish the exact day the South Lake Union venue first opened to the public. The early-2023 date should therefore be understood as the company’s original projection, not a verified opening date.
