Fish in Sea of Thieves are tied to different map areas, and some catches also depend on bait or time of day. Rare’s official guide counts 10 fish types, each with five varieties, but the official pages cited here do not provide a verified, current species-by-species location chart. Use the in-game clues or Rare’s fish poster to check a specific species rather than relying on an unverified list.
What the fish locations chart can—and cannot—confirm
Rare’s 2020 fishing guide says species vary by area and can depend on time of day and bait. It also notes that some varieties are harder to catch, including super-rare colors and glowing fish found at night. The guide points to a custom fish poster as a visual aid, but its web article does not transcribe a complete location-and-bait chart.

That distinction matters: a chart that assigns a region, bait, or special condition to every fish should be checked against the poster or a current in-game source. The official material cited here supports the general rules, not exact entries for each species.

How to find the right fishing spot
- Check the area. Fish species are not all available everywhere; use the region or location indicated by a verified chart or by in-game clues.
- Match the bait. Bait is optional for fishing generally, but specific bait is needed in some areas to catch the full set of species.
- Consider time of day. Rare identifies time of day as a possible factor and says glowing variants are found at night.
- Separate species conditions from trophy size. Any fish can appear at trophy size, according to Rare. Trophy fish resist more strongly; trophy status is not a separate location requirement.
Rare’s official Anniversary Update and Release Notes 2.0 place fishing and bait among the activities introduced with The Hunter’s Call. For voyage-specific clues, later Release Notes 3.3.1 describe Fishing Maps from Captain’s Fishing Voyages; those maps show only part of an island near a fishing location, not a complete species chart.
How to fish
- Open the equipment radial and select the fishing rod from its second page.
- Equip bait if the fish or area you are targeting calls for it; otherwise, cast without bait.
- Cast into the sea or a pond and wait for a fish to bite. Rare says you can fish from a ship or an island.
- When the fish pulls, pull your rod in the opposite direction. Do not reel while it is resisting.
- Reel when the fish stops pulling, then repeat the pull-and-reel pattern until you land it.
Pulling in the wrong direction or reeling while the fish is still resisting can snap the line. If that happens, you lose the catch and the bait used for that attempt.

What to do with your catch
You can cook fish before selling it. Rare’s guide says cooked fish restores more health and sells for more gold than raw fish, while burnt fish sells for less. Catches can be sold to Hunter’s Call representatives at Seaposts. The cited guide does not establish current gold values, so check the game for present rewards.
