First identify whether Sea of Thieves crashes at launch, closes during gameplay, or stalls at Xbox sign-in: Rare’s published Visual C++ remedy applies to a specific Windows Steam crash-at-boot issue, not SteamOS. Deck login reports and community suggestions are historical, not proof that a particular Proton version or reinstall will fix the problem.
First identify where the failure happens
The right troubleshooting path depends on both the operating system and the symptom. A Windows PC crash at startup is different from a Steam Deck launch failure, a crash during a voyage, or a game that reaches sign-in and gets stuck.
- Crash before the game opens: note whether this is Windows Steam or SteamOS on a Deck.
- Crash during gameplay: record when it happens and whether the entire device shuts down.
- Login stall or error: note the exact text, including Cyanbeard or Ashbeard, and whether it stalls at “signing on to adventure.”
These distinctions matter because Rare’s published troubleshooting articles cover particular Windows cases, while Deck community posts describe individual experiences rather than a verified general solution.
If Sea of Thieves crashes at startup on Windows Steam
Rare’s support article, last updated October 17, 2024, gives a remedy for the Windows Steam crash-at-boot case: repair or install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 x64 redistributable. It is not a Steam Deck or SteamOS procedure. Follow the article’s directions at Sea of Thieves Support: Stability – Steam Deck & Steam Client Instability.

C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonSteamworks Shared_CommonRedistvcredist2022and runVC_redist.x64.exe. - If the installer offers Modify Setup, choose Repair. If needed, obtain a fresh x64 redistributable using the Microsoft link in Rare’s article.
- If the crash continues, contact Sea of Thieves Support and include
ReliabilityEvents.csvfrom%localappdata%Athena.
Rare says this procedure is not required for the Windows Store version. Do not install or run this Windows redistributable as a supposed SteamOS fix.
If the game crashes during Windows gameplay
Rare’s separate gameplay-crash guidance is also for Windows/Steam; it was last updated June 23, 2023. It recommends checking local game files, graphics drivers, background applications, overlays, and CPU/GPU overclock settings. These checks are not established as Steam Deck fixes.

If the problem is on Steam Deck
The cited Rare stability article does not provide an equivalent SteamOS troubleshooting procedure. Community forum threads document historical reports of long loading, sign-in stalls, and Ashbeard or Cyanbeard errors, including users stuck at “signing on to adventure.” Some posts suggest Proton-related changes, but reports are mixed: trying different Proton versions, reinstalling, or switching modes did not reliably solve every user’s issue. Treat these as personal reports, not current, verified instructions.
- A Steam Deck report of being stuck on “signing on to adventure”.
- A Steam Deck report of long loading and Ashbeard during login.
Those threads show that players have encountered Deck launch and sign-in problems; they do not establish how common the issue is or whether a workaround works on current SteamOS and game versions. No attributable statistic about Steam Deck crash prevalence is established by these sources.

What to send support
For a Windows startup crash, Rare specifically requests ReliabilityEvents.csv from %localappdata%Athena. For a Deck issue, the cited sources do not name a particular log file or confirm a universal fix. When contacting Sea of Thieves Support, give them details that distinguish your case:
- Steam Deck/SteamOS or Windows PC, and whether you launch through Steam.
- Whether the failure is at launch, during gameplay, or at sign-in.
- The exact error text and the last screen or action before the failure.
- Your SteamOS and Deck update state, plus any Proton selection you tried.
Rare’s Known Issues index lists the Steam Deck/Steam Client instability item with an October 17, 2024 update date. That date alone does not establish whether every Deck user’s problem is currently resolved or unresolved.
