The more useful comparison is how their platforms, race formats, customization and multiplayer options fit the way you want to play.
How the commercial points to Mario Kart World
GamesRadar’s September 15, 2025 report transcribes the commercial opening with, “We all know that kart racing game.” It shows a blurred screen meant to evoke Mario Kart World, followed by, “It’s great! We don’t need to show it to you.” The ad then turns to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds: “But what if you can blast through and race on a whole ‘nother level?” GamesRadar’s report is the source for those lines; it is not an official transcript.
The unnamed “kart racing game,” the blurred image and the pivot to Sonic make the comparison clear in effect. The ad’s “another level” language is promotional framing, though, not evidence that CrossWorlds is objectively superior. No retrieved official statement spells out SEGA’s creative intent.
What SEGA said about competing in the same genre
SEGA Sammy acknowledged the overlap directly in its investor Q&A, saying Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds “overlaps with Mario Kart World in terms of game genre.” The company said it planned to reach a broad audience through availability on multiple platforms and to distinguish the game through collaborations with other companies’ strong intellectual properties. That is SEGA’s stated strategy, not an independent finding about how distinctive or successful the result was. SEGA Sammy investor Q&A

What actually distinguishes CrossWorlds’ races
The clearest gameplay contrast described in the available official materials is CrossWorlds’ Travel Ring structure. SEGA describes a three-lap race in which racers pass through a Travel Ring after the first lap, arrive in a transformed CrossWorld for lap two, then return to the original course for the final lap. This changes the setting and route within a race rather than keeping all laps on one course. SEGA’s launch information
That format may appeal if you want a race that changes scenery and layout mid-event. If you prefer a more traditional lap-based race, compare the actual tracks and modes on the platform you intend to play; the cited official descriptions do not provide a consistent side-by-side audit of Mario Kart World and CrossWorlds.

Which game might suit your preferences?
The sources support a comparison of particular features, not a verdict about which game is better overall. Start with the platform you own and the format of racing you enjoy:

- Sonic Racing: Crossworlds /Switch
- Choose based on platform first. SEGA announced CrossWorlds for several console and PC platforms, while Nintendo’s listing covers its Switch and Switch 2 versions. Check the store page for your system for current edition and upgrade details.
- Consider how much you want races to change mid-event. CrossWorlds’ Travel Rings transform the second lap’s world before returning racers to the starting course. If that shifting structure is the draw, it is a specific feature to weigh—not proof of broader superiority.
- Check the exact roster and extras included. SEGA distinguishes the base Sonic roster from guest and crossover content delivered through updates or premium DLC. Edition and release timing affect what is included.
- Match multiplayer to your group. For CrossWorlds, the relevant distinctions include local play, local wireless on Nintendo Switch and online play; consult the platform listing for the mode you plan to use.
