In Europe it is called Mega Drive Mini 2; in North America, Genesis Mini 2. The compact console is modeled on the Mega Drive 2 and adds built-in Mega-CD games to its retro library.
When did the Mega Drive Mini 2 launch?
SEGA announced the Mega Drive Mini 2 on June 6, 2022, and said it would go on sale October 27 that year. SEGA’s launch notice confirms that it went on sale on October 27, 2022. The company confirmed that the European Mega Drive Mini 2 and North American Genesis Mini 2 shared the date; this does not establish a simultaneous release in every market worldwide. SEGA’s announcement and its August 19 confirmation document the date and regional names.
How many games are included?
SEGA’s final Japanese launch announcement lists 60 titles: 50 Mega Drive and Mega-CD titles, plus 10 bonus titles. That is more precise than the announcement-stage description of “over 50 classic titles.” The figure is SEGA’s count for the Japanese launch edition; do not assume every regional edition has an identical game list without checking its regional product information. SEGA’s October 27 launch notice gives the final count. SEGA’s English announcement described the western lineup as “60 (+1)” in a social post, reflecting a regional counting convention rather than a reason to apply the Japanese breakdown to every edition.
What makes the Mini 2 different?
A Mega Drive 2-inspired design
The Mini 2 is a compact redesign based on the Mega Drive 2. Its built-in selection includes Mega-CD titles, a notable addition to the original Mega Drive Mini’s library. SEGA’s launch announcement said the Mini 2’s lineup surpassed the original Mini’s 42 games; the Mini 2 announcement-stage count was “over 50,” later finalized at 60 for the Japanese release. SEGA’s product page describes the design and library.
#1 Best Overall
- The iconic SEGA Genesis console that defined a generation of gaming returns in a slick, miniaturized unit.
- The SEGA Genesis Mini console is loaded with 42 legendary games and is plug and play ready right out of the box!
- Box contents: Sega Genesis Mini console and 2 wired controllers, 40 games + 2 bonus games, power cable and USB adapter, and HDMI cable.
Included controller and compatibility
A six-button control pad is included. SEGA also says controllers released for the original SEGA Mega Drive Mini are compatible with the Mini 2. This is controller compatibility, not evidence that original Mega Drive cartridges work: the Mini 2 is described in terms of built-in games and supported controllers. SEGA’s product page confirms the controller details.
What comes in the box, and what is optional?
SEGA’s product announcement lists the console, one controller, a high-speed HDMI cable, and a USB power cable as the package contents. The Fighting Pad 6B is a separately sold controller, so it is an optional extra rather than a substitute for the included pad. The Tower Mini 2 is a decorative accessory: it has no electrical components and does not include either Mini console. SEGA’s announcement provides these package and accessory details.
Is the Genesis Mini 2 the same console?
Genesis Mini 2 is the North American regional name for the product called Mega Drive Mini 2 in Europe. SEGA confirmed the two named regional editions shared the October 27, 2022 release date. Regional naming and date do not by themselves prove that the editions have identical game selections, so check the relevant regional product information when a particular game matters. SEGA’s regional date announcement names both editions.

- Edition and region: Look for Mega Drive Mini 2 in Europe or Genesis Mini 2 in North America, and verify the included games for the edition being offered.
- Games: The Japanese launch count is 60, comprising 50 Mega Drive and Mega-CD titles and 10 bonus titles; regional lineups should not be presumed identical.
- Controllers: One six-button pad is included, and original Mega Drive Mini controllers are listed as compatible. An additional Fighting Pad 6B is separate.
- Accessories: The Tower Mini 2 is decorative and does not contain the console.
The release date is historical. SEGA’s cited announcements establish the launch and product details, but they do not establish current retailer stock, condition, or pricing.
