Sonic game stories are described publicly as a collaboration—not the work of one writer alone. A 2024 report attributes to two SEGA employees the account that SEGA Japan, Sonic writers such as Ian Flynn, and the SEGA Lore Team contribute to the stories. SEGA’s own account of developing Sonic Frontiers shows how a broader game team also shapes the experience through design, prototyping, playtests, and revisions. The available sources do not lay out a complete script-writing or approval process.
Who contributes to Sonic game stories?
In a 2024 report, My Nintendo News attributed a description of Sonic story development to SEGA social media manager Katie and associate lore manager Chris. The report says the process involves collaboration among SEGA Japan, Sonic writers such as Ian Flynn, and the SEGA Lore Team. Read the My Nintendo News report.
This is a secondary outlet’s account of employee social posts, not a published production manual. The report links to a Reddit repost of an X post, and the original X post was not independently accessible. It supports describing the work as collaborative, but does not establish a fixed division of duties, a complete approval chain, or an identical workflow for every Sonic game.
Story writers and lore coordination
The reported contributor list distinguishes writers such as Ian Flynn from SEGA Japan and the SEGA Lore Team, but does not specify exactly who drafts dialogue, determines plot beats, checks continuity, or has final approval. Those responsibilities should not be inferred from the list alone.

The wider game team
Writing is only one part of a finished game. SEGA’s developer interview for Sonic Frontiers identifies designers, artists, programmers, and sound engineers among the project team. Their work affects what players actually experience alongside the story. SEGA’s Sonic Frontiers developer interview.
What Sonic Frontiers shows about development
Sonic Frontiers offers a project-level example of iteration between game design and the delivered experience; it is not proof that every Sonic title follows the same sequence.

Prototypes and the series’ feel
Sub Lead Game Designer Masaya Hirano described his role as assessing whether prototype gameplay stayed true to the series’ action-platforming spirit. In his words: “Essentially, my role was to assess whether the gameplay of the prototypes stayed true to the spirit of the Sonic series.” The example illustrates one design responsibility, not a claim that the designer controlled the story.
Feedback and revisions
The developers also discussed feedback, design changes, and playtests in North America. Hirano said he discussed playtester reactions with the director and implemented improvements. Lead Puzzle Programmer Yuki Mitsuishi said he was involved in implementing certain story and minigame elements. These details show how different roles could touch the player-facing narrative experience, while leaving the script’s drafting and approval steps undocumented.

What the story example tells us—and what it does not

SEGA later said its 2023 Final Horizon update added an alternate story, playable Amy, Knuckles, and Tails, and a new ending. SEGA’s Final Horizon announcement. How much of the process is publicly established?
The public record supports a limited, useful answer: a reported employee account names several contributors to Sonic stories, and SEGA’s Sonic Frontiers interview documents cross-disciplinary development and iteration on one game. It does not establish a franchise-wide workflow or name one person as the sole author of Sonic game plots.
- Supported: the 2024 report attributes story collaboration to SEGA Japan, writers such as Ian Flynn, and the SEGA Lore Team.
- Supported for Sonic Frontiers: developers describe prototypes, feedback, playtesting, and design improvements involving multiple roles.
- Not established: a complete script timeline, exact division of writing and lore duties, final approval authority, or a process shared by every Sonic game.
SEGA executive Osamu Ohashi said, “95% of Sonic’s sales are attributed to overseas.” SEGA’s interview page does not state the figure’s measurement year or sales period, so it should not be read as a current market statistic. SEGA’s 2nd Development Division interview.

A brief franchise context
SEGA’s Sonic Origins manual dates the original Sonic the Hedgehog release to 23 June 1991 in the US and Europe and 26 July 1991 in Japan.
