Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is worth playing if you want a tightly focused, atmospheric story told through striking visuals, strong performances and enveloping sound. It is less compelling if you expect deep combat, intricate puzzles or a broad world to explore: its journey is linear, and reviewers repeatedly note that its fights and environmental challenges can feel repetitive.
What kind of game is Hellblade II?
Ninja Theory’s sequel follows Senua, a Celtic warrior, through a survival story set in mythic Viking Iceland. It is a single-player, story-led action-adventure built around her perspective, not an open-world game or a mechanically expansive action title. Its 10th-century Icelandic setting draws on real locations recreated with satellite data and photogrammetry, according to the developer’s launch description.
The game combines traversal, perception-based environmental puzzles and sword combat to carry its focused narrative. Ninja Theory says it worked with neuroscience and lived-experience collaborators while developing its portrayal of Senua’s psychosis. That describes the developer’s approach; it is not an independent clinical evaluation.
What works best: atmosphere, acting and sound
The strongest case for playing Hellblade II is its audiovisual storytelling. Its bleak landscapes, performances and carefully placed sound make the journey feel intimate and unsettling. The presentation is designed to keep attention on Senua’s experience rather than on a large collection of activities or systems.

Le Monde critic Arnaud Hallet singled out the binaural audio: voices can seem to circle around the player, making headphones a particularly effective way to hear the sound design. Headphones are not established as a requirement, but they can bring out this spatial effect. Push Square’s review of the PS5 Pro version and TechRadar’s 2025 PS5 review also praised the game’s visuals, performances and technical presentation.
How much gameplay variety should you expect?
Expect a mostly linear sequence of exploration, environmental puzzles and one-on-one sword fights. The puzzles are generally straightforward, and the combat does not offer the depth or variety of a combat-focused action game. Hallet noted that fights can feel repetitive; Push Square and TechRadar also cited simple puzzles and recurring combat as weaknesses. TechRadar further pointed to slow pacing, especially for players looking for brisk action or frequent mechanical changes.

That trade-off is central to the experience: the limited interaction supports a focused, cinematic journey, but it can also make stretches feel repetitive. If you enjoy deliberately paced, dark storytelling and value atmosphere over player freedom, the narrow design may suit you. If you want complex combat, elaborate puzzles or substantial exploration, it is a poor match.
How did reviewers rate it?
Reviews broadly recognize the presentation while differing in how much the atmosphere compensates for limited gameplay. Push Square scored the PS5 Pro version 6/10, praising its visuals, audio and smooth 60fps Performance Mode while criticizing the simple puzzles and repetitive combat. That is one outlet’s assessment of a specific version, not a universal verdict. TechRadar’s PS5 review likewise praised the setting and performances but said the slow pacing and repeated combat remain. Le Monde emphasized the distinctive sound and visuals alongside the combat’s limitations.

Platforms, editions and what Enhanced adds
The original game launched on Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 21, 2024; launch material also listed Xbox Cloud Gaming and Game Pass. The Enhanced update and PS5 version followed on August 12, 2025. Ninja Theory said the Enhanced update was free for existing owners on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam. Check your platform’s store for current availability and price, which can vary by region.

The Enhanced version adds a 60 FPS Performance Mode where supported, a Dark Rot challenge mode, expanded Photo Mode with motion-capture tools, and more than four hours of developer commentary. Performance Mode is not available on Xbox Series S. The official PlayStation listing identifies PS5 and PS5 Pro support, offline single-player play and accessibility features. Edition contents and prices should be checked against the relevant store listing because they can vary by region or change over time.

The original launch announcement called the release digital-only. Later mentions of a limited-run physical edition do not establish its current availability, contents or supported platform through a primary product listing, so verify an official retailer or publisher listing before buying a disc copy.

Choose Hellblade II for a compact, dark, cinematic story in which image, performance and spatial sound do much of the work. Consider skipping it if your priority is combat mastery, puzzle complexity, exploration or a fast pace. The Enhanced features and PS5 release broaden where and how it can be played, but they do not change the fundamental trade-off between exceptional presentation and limited interaction.
