If that does not help, verify the game files and check Steam’s other launch troubleshooting steps. The right fix depends on when the crash happens, your operating system and hardware, and whether you use mods.
What should I do if FTL keeps crashing?
Work through these checks in order, testing the game after each change so you can tell whether it helped.
- Update your graphics drivers. Subset Games advises players to keep drivers current and calls out Intel integrated graphics in particular. Get drivers from the relevant graphics vendor’s official support site; avoid treating third-party driver-updater utilities as necessary. Subset Games’ FTL tech support FAQ says, “Please make sure your drivers are up to date.”
- Try FTL’s
-directxlaunch option. In Steam, right-click FTL in your Library and select Properties. On the General tab, find the launch-options control and enter-directxwithout quotation marks. Close the window and launch the game again. This is an option documented by the developer, not a guaranteed fix for every Windows crash. See the FTL FAQ. - Verify the game files. Steam’s technical-issue guidance includes checking the installation for missing or damaged files. Open FTL’s Steam properties and use the installed-files option to verify them; wait for Steam to finish, then try launching again. See Steam Support’s FTL page.
- Apply Steam’s general launch checks. Install available operating-system and driver updates, and temporarily close nonessential software that could interfere with Steam or the game. Steam provides guidance for Windows, Linux, and Mac in its article on games that do not run after “Preparing to Launch.” Open Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide.
- Compare your system with FTL’s requirements. Check the requirements for your platform and graphics hardware before assuming a crash points to a hardware fault. The listing’s minimums are a baseline, not a guarantee that every current operating-system and hardware combination will work. Steam lists FTL’s requirements by platform.
Check FTL’s platform requirements
Steam publishes minimum requirements for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux. The listing specifies OpenGL 2.0 support and a minimum resolution of 1280×720. For Windows, Steam notes that some integrated Intel HD graphics cards have been known to work but are not officially supported. Check the current listing for the complete requirements for your platform: Steam Support — FTL: Faster Than Light.
Meeting a listed minimum does not ensure compatibility with every present-day OS version, driver, or configuration. If the game crashes despite meeting the baseline, continue with the troubleshooting steps and gather details about the failure rather than concluding that you need a new graphics card.

If FTL still crashes, collect details for support
Logs can help Subset Games investigate a crash. Its forum support instructions identify a crashlogs folder and stdout.txt for Windows Steam installations. Follow the instructions for your installation and include relevant logs when contacting support. Read Subset Games’ forum support instructions.

- Your operating system and version, plus relevant graphics hardware and driver details.
- Whether you use mods.
- When the crash occurs—for example, at launch, during a run, or after a particular action.
- The exact error message, if one appears.
- Relevant crash logs and
stdout.txt, when available.
Do not delete saves or profiles as an initial troubleshooting step: the cited official guidance does not recommend that as a general crash fix, and removing them could risk your progress.
