If Nuclear Nightmare keeps crashing on Steam Deck, start by installing any available SteamOS updates and restarting the Deck. Then check the game’s compatibility details and, if it is running through Proton, try the latest Proton version. These are Valve’s general troubleshooting steps—not a confirmed fix for every Nuclear Nightmare crash.
Steam currently labels the game Playable, which allows for manual configuration and does not guarantee crash-free play. A community report describes one specific crash after accepting a second friends-only invite through the Steam overlay, but it does not establish a universal Deck problem.
First, identify when and how it crashes
Before changing settings, note whether the game closes on launch, during play, or after multiplayer activity. Also check whether only the game exits or the Steam client or Deck itself freezes, and record any error message. Those details help distinguish an ordinary game crash from the narrower invite-related report described below.
- Does it happen in solo play, multiplayer, or both?
- Was a Steam overlay invite involved immediately before the failure?
- Does the game close, or does the whole client or device stop responding?
Try these troubleshooting steps in order
- Install updates and restart. Check for available Steam Deck software updates, install them, and restart the device. Valve recommends updates and a restart as starting points for Deck instability. Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide.
- Review the game’s compatibility details. Open Nuclear Nightmare on Steam and review the Steam Deck compatibility information for the title. Steam lists it as Playable; Valve explains that Playable games may need manual configuration. The label is not a guarantee of a crash-free experience. Steam’s Nuclear Nightmare listing and Valve’s compatibility-label overview.
- If the game is using Proton, try the latest Proton version. In Steam, open the game’s Library properties, enable the compatibility-tool selection, and choose the latest Proton version available. Change one setting at a time and note whether the crash pattern changes. Valve notes that enabling Proton can cause Steam to download the Windows version if only a Linux version is installed. This is general guidance, not a game-specific tested fix. Valve’s troubleshooting guide.
- Lower graphics settings if the crash occurs during play. Try a lower graphics preset or reduce individual graphics settings. Valve includes this as a general troubleshooting step; it has not been established as a specific fix for Nuclear Nightmare. Valve’s troubleshooting guide.
- Contact support if it still fails. For persistent Deck instability, Valve advises contacting Steam Support. Steam lists BG Productions as the game’s support provider at [email protected]. Include your Deck model, SteamOS version, selected Proton version, when the crash occurs, any error message, and whether an invite or overlay was involved. Valve’s troubleshooting guide and Steam’s support page for Nuclear Nightmare.
What the multiplayer invite report does—and does not—show
A user-submitted report on Valve’s Proton issue tracker describes a Linux Steam client crash and game freeze after the player accepted a second friends-only invite through the Steam overlay. The reporter said the issue could not be reproduced in private matches or the tutorial. This is a clue worth checking only if your crash follows a similar sequence; it is not a confirmed Steam Deck diagnosis or evidence that all players will encounter the problem. Proton issue #8288.

What is not established as a fix
The available guidance does not confirm that changing Proton versions, adjusting graphics, verifying files, reinstalling the game, deleting compatibility data, or buying hardware will fix this particular crash. Avoid treating any of those as a proven remedy for Nuclear Nightmare unless game-specific evidence supports it.
The Steam store describes Nuclear Nightmare as an Early Access game and says development includes additional work and bug fixing. That status does not indicate whether any particular crash has been fixed. Steam’s Early Access description.
