Sea of Thieves Season 15 launched on 20 February 2025 as a free seasonal update, expanding The Hunter’s Call and adding two Ancient Megalodons: the fiery Feared Redmaw and the coral-armored Barnacled Dread. Hunting features arrived in stages, with spears and wildlife added in later updates.
What Season 15 added at launch
Rare’s Season 15 launch announcement framed the update around a larger role for The Hunter’s Call and two powerful new Megalodons. Rare had previewed the season and its 20 February 2025 launch date on 6 February in its February 2025 monthly update.

The launch version expanded the Trading Company’s progression and activities, introduced emissary flags, and gave eligible Hunter’s Call crews a way to track Ancient Megalodon locations. Rare described further hunting content as forthcoming; it did not all arrive on launch day.
How Season 15 changed The Hunter’s Call
Before the expansion, players advanced The Hunter’s Call to rank 50 by handing fish and meat to representatives at Seaposts or through the Sovereigns. Season 15 raised the reputation cap to 100 and added five Distinction levels. It also brought new Fishing and Raid Voyages with company-specific loot, including Treasured Fish.

Emissary flags and tracking
Players could raise a Hunter’s Call Emissary Flag to earn increased rewards. The trade-off is exposure: nearby Reapers may target an emissary crew. At Grade 5, a Hunter’s Call crew could use its Map Table to track Ancient Megalodon locations. That tracking benefit was tied to the Grade 5 flag, not available to every crew, and it did not guarantee a victory.
The two Ancient Megalodons: Redmaw vs. Barnacled Dread
The variants demand different responses. Rare’s launch details describe the Redmaw as a fiery threat and the Barnacled Dread as an armored attacker that brings Ocean Crawlers aboard ships.

| Variant | Threat | Crew response |
|---|---|---|
| Feared Redmaw | Its explosive attack can set a ship ablaze. | Keep water ready so the crew can put out fires while continuing the fight. |
| Barnacled Dread | Coral armor protects it, and its “Eel-ectric invasions” send Ocean Crawlers onto attacking ships. | Repel the boarders and use cannons to break the armor before attacking the creature directly. |
Both variants offer loot when defeated. Their distinct mechanics mean crews should be ready to manage ship fires against the Redmaw, or split attention between Ocean Crawlers and the Dread’s armor.

- Sea of Thieves offers the essential pirate experience, from sailing and fighting to exploring and looting – everything you need to live the pirate life and become a legend in your own right.

Update 3.3.1: spears, wildlife and a balance change
Rare’s 3.3.1 release notes added throwable hunting spears that could be retrieved from solid surfaces or loaded into ship cannons. The update also introduced ambient wildlife, including seagulls, lizards, bats and harmless jellyfish, and changes to fishing voyages. It reduced the damage the Feared Redmaw and Barnacled Dread take from a blowpipe’s Poison Dart.
Update 3.3.2: boars and an on-demand Megalodon hunt
In April 2025, update 3.3.2 added wild boars and the Megalodon Hunting Voyage. The voyage requires Hunter’s Call rank 20. Crews follow debris, and the Shrouded Glass helps reveal the enraged Megalodon’s trail. The update also increased rewards for emergent Kraken and Megalodon encounters and made emergent Megalodons more aggressive toward nearby vessels.
