The Feared Redmaw is a fire-wielding Ancient Megalodon in Sea of Thieves. Keep water ready before you engage: Rare’s Season 15 guidance specifically warns crews to be prepared to extinguish fires. Hunter’s Call Grade 5 emissaries can spot emergent Megalodon threats on the ship’s map, while the rank 20 Megalodon Hunting Voyage is a separate, general hunt—not a promise that Redmaw will be its target.
What makes the Feared Redmaw dangerous?
Introduced in Season 15, the Feared Redmaw is one of the Ancient Megalodons that Rare describes as having crossed over from the Sea of the Damned. Its defining hazard is fire. Rare’s Season 15 overview says crews attacked by Redmaw should have plenty of water ready to put out her fires.

That makes water a core combat supply, not an optional convenience. Keep buckets and access to water in mind during the fight so the crew can respond quickly if the ship catches fire. The official guidance establishes the fire threat, but does not publish exact damage, attack cadence, or health values.
How to find the Feared Redmaw
Use a Hunter’s Call Grade 5 Emissary
Rare says Hunter’s Call Grade 5 Emissaries have an advantage: they can spot emergent new Megalodon threats on their ship’s map. This is the official discovery tip for emergent threats such as Redmaw. It is an advantage rather than a guarantee that Redmaw will appear at a particular time or location. Rare’s Sea of Thieves Season 15 overview.

Distinguish emergent encounters from Hunting Voyages
Rare’s 2025 release notes describe a general Megalodon Hunting Voyage unlocked at Hunter’s Call rank 20. Crews follow debris and can use the Shrouded Glass to see the enraged beast’s trail. The notes do not say that this voyage always targets the Feared Redmaw, so treat it as a way to hunt a Megalodon, not a Redmaw-specific summon. Rare’s Sea of Thieves release notes on Steam.
Prepare the crew and ship
- Keep water readily available. Redmaw’s fire is the encounter’s signature danger, and Rare explicitly advises having plenty of water ready.
- Organize the crew’s response. Decide who will handle fires and who will keep the ship moving and the fight underway, so urgent repairs and extinguishing do not depend on one person noticing everything.
- Consider Hunter’s Call activity. Grade 5 Emissary status gives the map-spotting advantage Rare describes. Rank 20 also opens the general Megalodon Hunting Voyage, if your crew wants to pursue that system.
A 2025 creator walkthrough also recommends preparing supplies and pursuing Hunter’s Call activity before the fight; treat that as practical player advice, not an official guarantee or additional Redmaw mechanic. ConCon’s 2025 walkthrough.

During the encounter: prioritize fire control
- Keep the ship’s water response ready. When fire breaks out, use water to extinguish it rather than letting it spread while the crew focuses only on attacking.
- Keep the crew coordinated. Maintain the division of attention between fighting Redmaw and keeping the vessel under control; the practical objective is to prevent fire from consuming the crew’s capacity to respond.
- Continue the fight while managing the ship. Rare’s available guidance highlights fire preparation, but does not specify a unique weapon, exact attack sequence, or numerical strategy for defeating Redmaw.
Rewards and commendations
Rare’s 3.3.2 update notes say emergent Megalodon and Kraken encounters received additional treasure, including a greater chance of Hunter’s Call items. This is a dated update note, not a complete current drop table or a promise of a particular item from Redmaw. The same notes record a reduction in how often Ancient Megalodons overturn a ship.
Rare’s March 27, 2025 update entry says defeat commendation progress is awarded to every participating crew that deals damage, rather than only to the crew landing the final blow. A later hotfix says Redmaw and Barnacled Dread commendation progress should register consistently. These are specific patch updates, not confirmation that every later change has been audited. Community documentation lists a commendation called “Hunter of the Feared Redmaw,” requiring ten Ancient Feared Redmaw defeats and awarding the matching title. It also lists fire-related commendations involving an attempt to extinguish Redmaw with a bucket, extinguishing fire during an encounter, and using fire to make Redmaw overheat and explode; the page associates progression with Eternal Hunt ship cosmetics. Rare’s available 2025 update notes cover encounter and commendation adjustments, but do not provide current exact health, attack cadence, damage values, or a complete Redmaw drop table. Avoid planning around unofficial numerical claims as if they were official mechanics. The reliable tactical distinction is simpler: use map visibility to help spot emergent threats, and be ready to control fire when Redmaw attacks.
