Its anime-inspired presentation and layered ECHO mechanics give it a distinctive identity, but the control scheme is a real point of contention. PC Gamer’s review praised the presentation and story while criticizing the drifting, so whether the game clicks may depend more on its handling than its theme.
What is Screamer?
Developed and published by Milestone, Screamer launched on March 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store. It combines arcade racing with vehicle combat and a story about an underground tournament in a dystopian world of cities, deserts and woodlands. Five teams enter, each with its own members and motives. Milestone’s official game page describes the setting and core features.

This is not a straightforward remake of Milestone’s 1995 game. In a January 2026 interview, game director Federico Cardini said the new title reimagines the original with an anime influence. That makes it a revival of the name and spirit, rather than a direct reproduction of the earlier game. Cardini’s interview with Xbox Wire explains the distinction.
How does the racing and combat work?
Screamer ties its driving and attacks together through ECHO, a resource system with two key elements: Sync and Entropy. Spending Sync lets you use Boost or Shield; taking actions charges Entropy, which powers Strikes and Overdrive. The result is a racer where acceleration, defense and attacks compete for attention alongside the track and your opponents.

- Longing, ambition, vengeance. Stand up for what you believe in and prove it's worth fighting for: this is the call every Screamer must answer to unravel the dark truth behind the most brutal racing showdown ever and its mysterious master.
- Pick battles that blend extreme racing with proper fighting mechanics to fuel a captivating narrative featuring iconic characters.
- Drift the sickest vehicles around to discover what’s beneath this anime-inspired world.
- Boost and Shield: spend Sync to gain speed or protect yourself.
- Strikes: use Entropy to attack rivals.
- Overdrive: enter a temporary high-power state. Its protection does not last, leaving you vulnerable when it ends.
Active shifting rewards timing, adding another demand on top of steering and resource management. The control scheme is also unusual: the left stick steers, while the right stick handles drifting. Milestone presents this as a precision-focused system, but the central question is whether that extra control work feels rewarding once a race gets hectic. Milestone’s feature description outlines the ECHO system and controls.
Does the handling work?
The available review evidence points to a divided experience rather than a settled verdict. PC Gamer’s Phil Iwaniuk praised the presentation and the integration of the story, but found the twin-stick drifting a significant weakness. His March 22, 2026 review scored the game 72 and summed up the tension this way: “An immaculately presented arcade racer with a thousand good ideas, but the twin-stick drifting wasn’t one of them.” Read PC Gamer’s review.

- Assetto Corsa Competizione allows you to feel the real atmosphere of the GT3 championship
- Compete against official drivers, teams, cars circuits reproduced in game with the highest level of accuracy ever achieved on console
- Sprint, Endurance, and Spa 24 Hours races come to life with an incredible level of realism, in both single and multiplayer modes
That is one outlet’s assessment, not a consensus score, and it should not be treated as proof that every player will dislike the handling. Still, the criticism targets a foundational part of play. If you enjoy learning a precise, unconventional control system, twin-stick drifting may be part of the appeal. If you want immediate, familiar arcade handling, it is a reason to be cautious.
What can you play?
The story Tournament mode is joined by solo and team challenges, online multiplayer and local split-screen for up to four players, according to Milestone. The listed formats include:

- UK PSN account may be required for any online features
- Race and checkpoint
- Team race
- Time attack and score challenge
- Overdrive challenge
The variety gives the game more than a single campaign structure: some events emphasize placing or time, while others foreground teams, scores or the signature Overdrive system. For playing locally with friends, the official feature list specifically names split-screen for up to four. Milestone’s launch announcement covers the modes and multiplayer options.

Is Screamer worth playing?
Screamer is easiest to recommend to players drawn to its anime-styled tournament, story-led presentation and racing that asks you to juggle offense, defense and speed. Its ECHO system gives combat a clear connection to driving rather than treating attacks as an unrelated extra. The main caveat is equally clear: twin-stick drifting is central, and at least one named review found it frustrating rather than satisfying.
If handling is your priority, approach it as a control-system question, not simply a choice between arcade and simulation racing. If the unusual scheme sounds intriguing, the mix of story, varied challenges and up-to-four-player local split-screen offers more reasons to consider it. If you prefer conventional steering and drifting, the PC Gamer criticism is a meaningful warning. The title is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC storefronts including Steam and Epic Games Store.
