Screamer is a combat-focused arcade racer built around drifting, boosts, attacks, and an anime-style story—not a conventional racing simulation. Its presentation and narrative have earned praise, but its twin-stick drifting may be a sticking point. PC Gamer’s Phil Iwaniuk scored it 72, describing a game with many good ideas and criticizing that central handling choice. Whether it suits you depends less on chasing a realistic driving model and more on whether active combat and drift-based racing sound appealing.
What critics say about Screamer
PC Gamer’s Phil Iwaniuk gave Screamer a score of 72 in 2026. The review praised its anime presentation and the way character relationships and exposition are woven into the racing structure, while identifying twin-stick drifting as its main weakness. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus across critics.

Iwaniuk’s verdict called it “An immaculately presented arcade racer with a thousand good ideas, but the twin-stick drifting wasn’t one of them.” Read the full PC Gamer review for the reviewer’s detailed assessment. The review used a PC with an i7-9700K, RTX 2080 Ti, and 16 GB RAM, and marked the game Steam Deck Verified; those details describe that review’s setup and listing, not a guarantee of performance on every PC or handheld.
How Screamer plays: racing with combat decisions
Milestone presents Screamer as an arcade racer set in an anime-styled dystopian world, where cars are also fighting machines. The ECHO system puts three decisions at the center of races: use Boost for speed, Strike to attack, or Shield to defend. Overdrive raises the intensity further, so success is not always simply a matter of reaching the finish line first.
#1 Best Overall
- Longing, ambition, vengeance. Stand up for what you believe in and prove it's worth fighting for: this is the call every Screamer must answer to unravel the dark truth behind the most brutal racing showdown ever and its mysterious master.
- Pick battles that blend extreme racing with proper fighting mechanics to fuel a captivating narrative featuring iconic characters.
- Drift the sickest vehicles around to discover what’s beneath this anime-inspired world.
Xbox’s game description says Team Race can reward taking down opponents as well as finishing, while another mode emphasizes staying in Overdrive. These systems make the game a better fit for players who enjoy juggling racing lines and combat choices than for those seeking a straightforward lap-time challenge.
Platforms, release date, and demo
Screamer released on March 26, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Milestone identifies Steam and the Epic Games Store as PC storefronts. The official listings reviewed cover those platforms; they do not establish a Nintendo Switch version.

Milestone announced a free demo on May 21, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Epic Games Store. It includes the first six Tournament chapters and Race and Team Race modes, playable solo or in split-screen with up to four players according to Milestone. Demo availability can change, so check the current listing before planning to download it: Milestone’s demo announcement.
Choosing a platform and play style
The official listings document solo play, online multiplayer, and local split-screen. Your choice may come down to where you already play, whether you want couch multiplayer, and—on PC—whether your hardware meets the published requirements. Steam lists minimum and recommended PC specifications on its Screamer store page. No cited source establishes comparative frame rates or visual quality across platforms, so there is no substantiated platform-performance winner here.

- UK PSN account may be required for any online features
On Xbox, online multiplayer requires a separately sold subscription, according to the US Xbox store listing. For local play, the demo’s split-screen support offers a way to try Race and Team Race with others before committing, while the full game’s official listings also document split-screen play.
Accessibility and practical considerations
The US PlayStation listing documents adjustable difficulty, a basic game-speed option that can slow play temporarily or during specific actions, and the ability to pause during gameplay or cinematics in offline play. Milestone also says the game includes auditory and visual accessibility options, though its game page does not enumerate every setting. Consult the in-game options or current publisher support information for the precise controls available to you. See the PlayStation product and accessibility page and Milestone’s official game page.

On PC, Steam includes Controller among the game’s tags, but a controller is not established as mandatory. If twin-stick drifting is the aspect you are unsure about, trying the demo—if it remains available in your region—is a more useful test than assuming the handling will suit you based on genre labels alone.

Steam showed 1,084 all-time user reviews with 80% positive when its listing was checked in 2026. Its recent-review snapshot showed 53 reviews and 75% positive in the last 30 days at that time. These storefront figures are volatile and reflect Steam users only; they are not sales or player-count statistics, and they should not be generalized to all platforms. The available critic evidence cited here is PC Gamer’s individual 72 score, not a complete cross-publication average.
