Screamer is Milestone’s 2026 arcade racer built around an unusual idea: steer and drift with separate sticks, then turn racing resources into attacks and defenses. Its anime-styled story and combat give it a distinct identity, but the twin-stick handling asks for patience. Whether that trade works for you depends on how much you value learning a new driving system over the immediately readable cornering of a conventional arcade racer.
What is Screamer?
Milestone’s official game page describes Screamer as a high-speed arcade racer with vehicular combat and a storyline set in an anime-style dystopian world. The 2026 game is a reimagining of the original Screamer’s spirit, rather than a straightforward remake, according to an Xbox Wire feature with Milestone.

That combination is central to its appeal: this is not simply a traditional race with a story layered on top, nor a combat game that happens to use cars. Racing, character presentation, and fighting are designed to operate together.
How do Screamer’s controls and combat work?
Twin-stick driving changes the feel of cornering
In Milestone’s October 2025 gameplay introduction, the defining control choice is the Twin Stick system: players steer and drift independently. That separation gives the handling its own character, but it also means the game may not feel intuitive if you expect one familiar steering input to manage a corner from entry through exit.

- Longing, ambition, vengeance. Stand up for what you believe in and prove it's worth fighting for: this is the call every Screamer must answer to unravel the dark truth behind the most brutal racing showdown ever and its mysterious master.
- Pick battles that blend extreme racing with proper fighting mechanics to fuel a captivating narrative featuring iconic characters.
- Drift the sickest vehicles around to discover what’s beneath this anime-inspired world.
PC Gamer’s March 2026 review found the twin-stick handling disorienting. Its reviewer specifically describes awkward-feeling transitions out of drifts and says that getting used to the controls did not ultimately deliver the satisfaction of a more conventional arcade racer with more predictable cornering. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that every player will respond the same way; it does make the learning curve the key question for anyone considering the game.
ECHO turns driving resources into tactical choices
Each car carries the ECHO system, which divides its resources between two functions. Sync supports Boost and Shield, while Entropy powers Strike and Overdrive, according to Milestone’s gameplay introduction. The PlayStation listing also describes Boost, Strike, Shield, and Overdrive as tools for racing and combat.

- Assetto Corsa Competizione allows you to feel the real atmosphere of the GT3 championship
- Compete against official drivers, teams, cars circuits reproduced in game with the highest level of accuracy ever achieved on console
- Sprint, Endurance, and Spa 24 Hours races come to life with an incredible level of realism, in both single and multiplayer modes
That setup ties offense and defense to the flow of a race rather than treating combat as a separate mode. Milestone also describes teams of three and a roster of 15 distinct cars, each with its own skills. The 15-car figure comes from the developer’s 2025 introduction; it should not be read as a verified post-launch roster count.
How are the story and modes structured?
Tournament and Arcade
Milestone’s launch announcement describes Tournament as a story mode involving five teams. It also lists an Arcade menu of solo and team challenges. PC Gamer’s reviewer praised the character writing, narrative cohesion, and anime presentation, particularly how those elements connect to the racing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Screamer worth playing?
Screamer is most compelling for players who want an arcade racer with a strong visual and narrative identity, and who are willing to practice a less familiar control scheme. The story, characters, and anime presentation were strengths for PC Gamer’s reviewer; the same review’s main reservation was that mastering separate-stick steering and drifting did not make the driving feel as satisfying or predictable as more conventional arcade handling.

Before choosing it, weigh the parts that matter most to you:
- Consider it if: you enjoy story-led racing, stylized character presentation, and combat integrated into races, or you are curious to learn a distinctive handling system.
- Be cautious if: you want cornering to feel immediately legible, or you prefer the predictable response of a conventional arcade racer.
- Check your setup if: local split-screen, online play, accessibility options, or language support will determine whether the game fits. Store feature details can vary by platform.
Milestone also identifies a companion comic, Screamer: Loss, created with Panini to expand a main character’s backstory. It is an optional story tie-in, not a stated requirement for understanding the game; current stock and edition details are not established here.
