Rare ha cambiato rotta sui server personalizzati di Sea of Thieves: nel luglio 2025 li aveva descritti come una funzione prevista per l’inizio del 2026 con un modello in abbonamento; sono poi arrivati nella Stagione 20 come Custom Seas gratuiti per tutti. La Stagione 21 ne ha ampliato gli strumenti con i Layout, mentre le richieste dei giocatori sui contenuti futuri restano interessi segnalati, non promesse di roadmap.
Come sono cambiati i piani di Rare
Nel Community Direct del 10 luglio 2025, Rare disse di voler offrire più dettagli e contesto attraverso il ritorno dei Developer Update, una serie video presentata dal direttore di produzione Drew Stevens. Parlò anche di rinnovare l’attenzione alla coerenza narrativa e riconobbe problemi di salute del gioco e prestazioni, in particolare nella risposta ai cheater e nell’esperienza su PC. I server personalizzati erano allora indicati come una funzione dei primi mesi del 2026, proposta con un modello in abbonamento: non era ancora una funzione disponibile.

Il Community Direct del 30 marzo 2026 segnò il cambiamento più concreto. Rare disse che il modello di contenuti in tre atti aveva messo sotto pressione i team senza soddisfare le aspettative dei giocatori e che doveva cambiare. Nello stesso aggiornamento, presentò i Custom Seas come elemento centrale della Stagione 20 e annunciò che sarebbero stati gratuiti. La Stagione 20 uscì il 18 giugno 2026.

La differenza è importante: la descrizione del 2025 era un piano preliminare, non il prezzo o lo stato attuale della funzione. Rare ha detto che avrebbe usato i commenti dei giocatori durante la distribuzione dei Custom Seas per orientarne le iterazioni successive.

Come funzionano i Custom Seas
I Custom Seas permettono di creare modalità e sessioni personalizzate. Le note di rilascio 3.8.0 del 18 giugno 2026 specificano che il proprietario della sessione può invitare fino a 24 giocatori, distribuiti in un massimo di sei equipaggi. Può inoltre configurare tipi di nave e composizione degli equipaggi, mentre interruttori dedicati modificano le impostazioni del mondo.
Per chi preferisce partire da una configurazione pronta, Rare ha incluso preset curati: Adventure, Competitive Pirates, Competitive Sandbox e Social. Sono opzioni diverse per impostare la sessione, non una garanzia che ogni modalità o regola del gioco sia modificabile.

Cosa ha aggiunto la Stagione 21
La Stagione 21 è iniziata il 17 settembre 2026. Rare ha dichiarato che il set di strumenti gratuiti dei Custom Seas continuerà a crescere; tra le aggiunte di questa stagione ci sono i Layout. Come spiega l’annuncio della Stagione 21, un Layout registra gli oggetti collocati e le loro posizioni, così da poter ricaricare in seguito una configurazione preparata e riprendere una sessione da quello stato. Le note di rilascio della Stagione 21 fissano il limite a 30 Layout per ogni location.
In pratica, i Layout rendono più semplice riutilizzare allestimenti e disposizioni di oggetti nelle sessioni personalizzate: non occorre ricostruirli da zero ogni volta. È un’estensione degli strumenti creativi già lanciati con la Stagione 20, non un cambio del modello di accesso.

Il sondaggio sui contenuti futuri pubblicato da Rare il 24 ottobre 2025 ha riportato cinque aree di interesse più popolari tra gli utenti attivi: nuove regioni e località, più contenuti narrativi, nuovi tipi di nave, nuovi eventi mondiali e nuovi strumenti e meccaniche sandbox. Rare non ha fornito percentuali o dimensioni del campione nel post e ha precisato di non poter ancora commentare in modo specifico cosa avrebbe realizzato in quelle aree.
