ProbablyMonsters announced a $200 million Series A in 2021 to grow its business and support long-term game-development teams. The Bellevue, Washington, company said it would pair independent game-making studios with a shared central platform for funding, staffing, technology, administration and publishing negotiations.

What is ProbablyMonsters?

ProbablyMonsters is a video game company based in Bellevue, Washington. When it announced the financing in 2021, it was building a multi-studio organization rather than presenting itself as a single game studio. Contemporary coverage reported that the company then had more than 230 employees and three internal studios; those are historical 2021 figures, not current headcount or studio totals. (GeekWire, 2021)

Who invested in ProbablyMonsters?

ProbablyMonsters said its $200 million Series A was led by LKCM Headwater Investments. The figure and round were reported by GeekWire and Built In Seattle in 2021. Contemporary coverage and company claims described it as the largest Series A in gaming at the time; that superlative was not independently established as an all-time record. (GeekWire; Built In Seattle)

What was the $200 million intended to support?

The company described the capital as a way to grow the business and provide stability for its development teams over the long timelines involved in making games. In the 2021 coverage, founder and CEO Harold Ryan said: “Our goal is to make ProbablyMonsters a home where developers with vision can build a meaningful career.” (GeekWire)

How did ProbablyMonsters’ studio model work?

ProbablyMonsters described a shared-company platform intended to let development teams focus on making games while the central organization handled support work. Its 2020 company description included funding, staffing, administration, technology and publishing negotiations among the platform’s functions. (ProbablyMonsters, 2020)

Organization How support is arranged What the development team focuses on
Standalone studio The studio manages its own business and publishing arrangements. Game development alongside the operational work required to run the studio.
ProbablyMonsters’ described model A central platform provides funding, staffing, administration, technology and publishing negotiations to multiple teams. Making games, with shared services intended to reduce the operational burden.

This is the organizational distinction the company emphasized; it does not by itself establish how much support any particular team received or the commercial outcome of a game.

What changed after the announcement?

Studio rosters and ownership have changed since the 2021 financing. Sony announced in 2023 that it would acquire Firewalk Studios, which had been part of ProbablyMonsters. Firewalk should therefore be described as a former ProbablyMonsters studio when discussing the company today. (Sony, 2023)

As of October 8, 2026, ProbablyMonsters’ official website lists Crimson Moon, Nekome: Nazi Hunter, Ire: A Prologue and Storm Lancers. These are titles in its current public-facing catalog, not games identified as the purpose or output of the 2021 funding announcement. (ProbablyMonsters; ProbablyMonsters on Steam)
