Are Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Slowing? What the Latest Figures Show

Switch 2 sales were lower in the latest reported year-over-year quarter, while Nintendo forecast fewer units for FY2027 than its FY2026 launch-year total. The figures point to a slowdown, not proof of a lasting demand decline.

Yes, reported Nintendo Switch 2 sales were lower in the latest year-over-year quarter, and Nintendo expects fewer units in FY2027 than it sold in the launch-year FY2026. Nintendo reported 19.86 million hardware units for FY2026; the Associated Press reported 3.82 million for April–June 2026, about 34% below Nintendo’s 5.82 million for the same quarter a year earlier. Nintendo’s FY2027 forecast is 16.50 million units, about 17% below FY2026 actual sales. These figures show a slowdown against the launch-year cycle, but do not establish a lasting decline in consumer demand.

What the Switch 2 sales figures show

Nintendo’s fiscal year ends in March: FY2026 ended in March 2026, and FY2027 runs through March 2027. Nintendo’s annual hardware data records 19.86 million Switch 2 units in FY2026. Its quarterly figures show how unevenly those sales were distributed across the launch year:

Fiscal quarter Period Switch 2 hardware sell-in
FY2026 Q1 April–June 2025 5.82 million units
FY2026 Q2 July–September 2025 4.54 million units
FY2026 Q3 October–December 2025 7.01 million units
FY2026 Q4 January–March 2026 2.49 million units

The figures are Nintendo’s reported sell-in totals in its FY2026 sales presentation, published May 8, 2026. The holiday quarter was the high point; the March quarter was substantially lower. This seasonal pattern is why comparing the same quarter across years is more informative than treating one quarter-to-quarter change as a trend.

Did Switch 2 sales fall after the launch year?

In the latest same-quarter comparison available in the cited sources, yes. The Associated Press reported 3.82 million Switch 2 sales for April–June 2026, compared with Nintendo’s 5.82 million for April–June 2025. That is a decline of about 34%. The newer figure is AP-reported; the prior-year figure comes from Nintendo’s official results, so this is not a like-for-like pair of figures from one reporting table.

Nintendo also forecast 16.50 million hardware units for FY2027, about 17% below the 19.86 million it reported for FY2026. The forecast is a projection for the full fiscal year, not an achieved result, and compares a later-year expectation with the actual first fiscal year. The cited sources include no FY2027 holiday-quarter result.

What these numbers measure—and what they do not

Sell-in is not the same as consumer purchases

Nintendo labels its quarterly unit data “sell-in,” defining it as sales by the Nintendo group to outside entities, including business partners and direct consumer sales through its own online stores. Sell-through, by contrast, refers to sales to individual consumers through retailers and Nintendo’s direct sales. The figures above should therefore be read as reported sales under Nintendo’s sell-in measure, not as a complete tally of consumer purchases.

Hardware units do not show revenue or profit

Unit totals answer how many consoles were reported sold, not how much revenue or profit the platform generated. Nintendo’s FY2026 financial material says the Switch 2’s higher unit price contributed to platform-business sales growth, so hardware-unit changes alone cannot establish the direction of revenue or profitability.

Software totals are a separate measure

Nintendo reported 48.71 million Switch 2 software units in FY2026, including bundled and downloadable copies; this is not a count of physical game boxes sold. Its FY2026 results material listed 14.70 million Mario Kart World units, while Nintendo’s software sales page showed 15.39 million life-to-date units as of June 30, 2026. Those figures have different reporting cutoffs and should not be treated as interchangeable. Nintendo’s Top Selling Title Sales Units page provides the dated life-to-date figure and counting notes.

Does the evidence prove a lasting demand decline?

No. It establishes that the reported April–June total was lower than the prior-year quarter and that Nintendo’s FY2027 forecast is below its FY2026 actual. It does not establish why sales changed or whether consumer demand will continue to fall over multiple quarters. A launch year and a later year are different comparison environments, and the seasonal Q3 peak in FY2026 makes quarter matching important.

Nintendo characterized Switch 2 sales as having “remained strong throughout its first fiscal year” in its May 8, 2026 results presentation, adding that the launch, holiday season and March release of Pokémon Pokopia contributed to hardware sales. That is Nintendo’s description of its own performance; the quarterly figures provide the more specific unit pattern. The next useful evidence would be later same-quarter results and actual FY2027 sales, rather than treating a single quarter or forecast as proof of a durable trend.
