Mega Crit’s Slay the Spire 2 launched in Steam Early Access on March 5, 2026. That is later than the 2025 Early Access window the studio announced when it revealed the sequel on April 15, 2024. The sequel keeps the roguelike deckbuilding climb, adds new and returning characters, and supports online co-op for up to four players.

From announcement to Early Access

Mega Crit revealed Slay the Spire 2 on April 15, 2024, after more than three years of development, and initially targeted a 2025 Steam Early Access release. That date was a plan, not the launch. The studio announced the actual date—March 5, 2026—on February 19, 2026, then confirmed the game was available in Early Access on launch day. Mega Crit’s reveal and launch announcement document the change.

A gameplay trailer followed on December 12, 2024, introducing a mix of new and returning characters alongside new cards, relics, and potions. The project is still under development: Mega Crit and Steam both describe it as an Early Access game, and its content may change as development continues.

What kind of game is Slay the Spire 2?

It is a roguelike deckbuilder from developer and publisher Mega Crit. Players build a deck and make repeated climbs through changing environments and encounters. The sequel features characters with individual cards, motives, and secrets, as well as new foes and events. Steam’s current listing identifies five playable characters, including two new ones, and says more cards, events, environments, and enemies are planned during Early Access. The Steam listing is the source for that current roster count and planned additions.

Can you play Slay the Spire 2 with friends?

Yes. The game supports online co-op for up to four players, with multiplayer-specific cards and opportunities for team synergies. Mega Crit’s FAQ says co-op is limited to Steam friends and does not include matchmaking, so players should not expect an in-game system for finding random teammates. Mega Crit’s FAQ describes those multiplayer limits.

Platforms, price, and Early Access plans

During Early Access, Mega Crit lists Steam on PC, macOS, and Linux as the available platforms, and says the game is compatible with Steam Deck. The studio says console and mobile versions are likely to follow Early Access rather than arrive during it. These are the FAQ’s stated platform plans, not a promise of a specific release date for other platforms.

Mega Crit’s FAQ gives a launch price of $24.99 USD, with regional price variations. It estimates Early Access could last roughly one to two years, while explicitly treating that span as an estimate rather than a fixed schedule. The same FAQ says the team expects to add and balance content during Early Access, using player feedback to inform balance and quality-of-life improvements. Check the Steam store page for the current regional price and availability.

Why make a sequel?

In a September 2024 newsletter, Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano explained that the sequel gave the team room to improve the game’s code architecture and performance, refresh its art and interface, make space for new mechanics, and support a larger team. The newsletter also said the game had been ported to Godot and stabilized; the FAQ names Godot as the engine. Yano’s rationale was not just a feature checklist: “Games aren’t a list of game mechanics and features.” Yano’s September 2024 newsletter provides that development context.

No prior experience is required, according to Mega Crit’s March 5, 2026 launch announcement: “For those who have never ventured into the Spire before, you don’t need any prior experience with Slay the Spire 1 to enjoy what Slay the Spire 2 has to offer.” The original game may provide context for returning characters and the series’ style, but the studio says newcomers can start with the sequel.

Is there a Slay the Spire 2 board game?

No physical adaptation of Slay the Spire 2 is established by the available official information. Mega Crit does feature Slay the Spire: The Board Game, made by Contention Games, as a franchise product; it adapts the original game, not the sequel. Its availability should not be inferred from the studio’s past preorder or convention-demo announcements. Mega Crit’s merchandise page identifies the franchise merchandise.
