Its premise may appeal to people wary of bluffing games because players have structured decisions as well as discussion—but deception is still central, so whether it suits your group depends on how much table talk you enjoy.
What kind of game is Secret Hitler?
Set in a fictionalized pre–World War II Germany, Secret Hitler assigns each player a secret identity and a party: Liberal or Fascist. One Fascist player is secretly Hitler. Players try to work out whom to trust while electing governments and passing policies. The historical theme is a setting for the game’s fictional roles and mechanics, not a historical simulation.
The official game website describes it as a social deduction game for 5–10 people. Its rules build each round from an election, a legislative session and, in some cases, an executive action. Players discuss suspicions and make claims, but their hidden roles mean those claims may be true or deceptive.
How do you win?
The two teams have different routes to victory:
| Team | Wins by |
|---|---|
| Liberals | Enacting five Liberal policies or assassinating Hitler. |
| Fascists | Enacting six Fascist policies or electing Hitler Chancellor after at least three Fascist policies have been enacted. |
That creates a tension between the visible policy track and the question of who is in each government. A policy may advance a team’s goal, while an election can reveal—or obscure—who appears trustworthy.
#1 Best Overall
- A fast-paced game of deception and betrayal
- Beautiful wooden components
- Solid game boards with foil inlay
- Hidden roles and secret envelopes for five to ten players
What happens during a round?
- Nomination: The President candidate nominates a Chancellor candidate.
- Election: Players vote on whether to approve that government. If it passes, the President and Chancellor proceed to a legislative session; if it fails, the election process continues according to the rules.
- Legislation: The elected President and Chancellor handle policy tiles. The enacted policy advances the corresponding track.
- Possible executive action: Enacting certain Fascist policies can give the President a power. Which powers are available depends on the Fascist board and player count; consult the official rules for the precise track and effects.
The rules list 17 policy tiles in total: six Liberal and 11 Fascist. Their unequal distribution means the policy draw itself is part of the uncertainty, alongside players’ choices and claims.
How much bluffing and discussion should you expect?
Discussion is not an optional extra: it is how players test accounts of elections and policy decisions, and how hidden-role players try to influence the group. A peer-reviewed study of speech timing in social deduction games recorded roughly 25–60 minutes of continuous conversation per gameplay session. That is the study’s recording duration, not an official advertised playtime for Secret Hitler.

- CATCH THE CHAMELEON: A bluffing board game where players must race to catch the chameleon before It's too late
- ONE SECRET WORD: In this board game for adults and family everyone knows the secret word - except for the player with the chameleon card
- DON'T GET CAUGHT: Use hidden codes, carefully chosen words, and a bit of finger-pointing to track down the guilty player... Before the imposter blends in and escapes!
- EASY TO LEARN, QUICK TO PLAY: Like all good family board games, it takes 2 minutes to learn and only 15 minutes to play. Recommended for 3-8 players and ages 12+
- MULTI-AWARD WINNING: "Best Party Game" At UK games expo. "Seal of excellence" From dice tower games. A perfect board game for adults and teenagers
The game does give players concrete actions—nominating, voting and handling policies—so it is not only an open-ended bluffing contest. But persuading others, interpreting limited information and deciding whether to lie are core to play. If your group dislikes accusation, deception or extended debate, the title’s pitch should not be taken as a promise that the game avoids those elements.
Does player count change the experience?
The official range is 5–10 players, and the information players receive changes across the 5–6-player and 7–10-player setups. In general, the team-knowledge rules differ by player count; do not assume that every Fascist player has identical information in every game. Use the setup instructions for your exact group size.

- EXPLORE THE ISLAND OF CATAN: Settle the uninhabited island of Catan by gathering resources, building infrastructure, and nurturing trade relationships.
- STRATEGY AND COMPETITION: Compete with 2-3 opponents to expand your settlements and cities while managing resources and avoiding the robber.
- TRADE, BUILD, AND SETTLE: Use brick, wood, wheat, ore, and sheep to construct roads, settlements, and cities in your race to 10 victory points.
- REPLAYABLE AND ENGAGING: With a modular hexagonal board, no two games are the same, offering endless strategic opportunities and replayability.
- FOR FAMILIES AND STRATEGY ENTHUSIASTS: Designed for 3-4 players, ages 10 and up, CATAN 6th Edition is perfect for family game nights and friendly competition. Add the CATAN 5-6 Player Extension (sold separately) to expand your game to 5-6 players.
This makes the game a poor fit for a smaller gathering than five, while groups within the stated range can use the rules’ corresponding setup. The right fit still depends on whether the group wants hidden identities and discussion, not just on reaching the minimum number.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it a good choice if you dislike bluffing games?
It may work for someone who dislikes games that offer little structure beyond improvising a lie: Secret Hitler repeatedly gives the table elections and policy outcomes to discuss. It is less likely to suit someone who wants to avoid deception or confrontational discussion altogether. The most useful question is not whether your group likes bluffing games in general, but whether it enjoys debating uncertain evidence and making claims while identities remain secret.
