Sea of Stars Reviews: Is the Retro RPG Worth Playing?

Sea of Stars is a strong fit for players drawn to retro JRPG style, pixel art and music, but its story and combat depth divide some reviewers.

Sea of Stars is worth considering if you want a polished, retro-inspired turn-based RPG built around expressive pixel art, a memorable soundtrack and familiar 1990s JRPG ideas. Reviews are broadly favorable, but the game is a less certain fit if you need consistently deep combat or tightly focused story writing.

What do reviews say about Sea of Stars?

As of October 8, 2026, Metacritic displayed an 87 Metascore from 48 critic reviews and an 8.0 user score from 1,251 ratings. The user ratings were 74% positive, 17% mixed and 9% negative. These are live aggregates, so the scores and review counts can change. See the current Metacritic listing.

The praise most often centers on the game’s pixel-art presentation, music and affectionate handling of classic RPG conventions. The reservations are not trivial: some reviewers found the story uneven and the turn-based combat or other systems too shallow to sustain their interest through the end.

What makes it feel like a classic JRPG?

Sabotage Studio describes Sea of Stars as inspired by classic 1990s role-playing games. Its official FAQ names Super Mario RPG, Illusion of Gaia and Chrono Trigger among its inspirations. That makes comparisons to Chrono Trigger useful for understanding the game’s lineage, but not a promise that it will reproduce that game’s particular story, pacing or combat depth. The studio’s FAQ has the full list of inspirations and game details.

Sea of Stars - Nintendo Switch
  • A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by the Classics!
  • Engaging Turn-Based Combat - Timed hits, combo attacks, boosting, damage types and spellbreaking.
  • Unshackled Traversal - Swim, climb, vault, jump off or hoist up as you traverse the world seamlessly.
  • A Story Rich Adventure - Dozens of characters and story arcs will take you on a captivating journey. A World You Can Touch - Need a change of pace? Go sailing, cooking, fishing or find a tavern to relax.
  • The retail version includes: a double-sided poster with artwork by Bryce Kho.

The review profile suggests that nostalgia works best here as a presentation and design pleasure: the visual style, soundtrack and classic-RPG feel are reliable strengths. Whether the systems themselves hold up is more divisive.

Is the combat too simple?

That depends on what you want from turn-based combat. Metacritic reproduces GamesRadar+’s August 28, 2023 review, which praised the detail in the art, soundtrack, locations, characters and plot while saying the turn-based battles and other systems lacked depth. Worth Playing’s review, also dated August 28, 2023, called the story “a touch weak and disjointed” and said combat “falls off a bit toward the end.” Those are individual critics’ judgments, not a universal verdict, but they identify the clearest risk for players who prioritize tactical complexity.

Sea of Stars - Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Engaging Turn-Based Combat - Timed hits, combo attacks, boosting, damage types and spellbreaking.
  • Unshackled Traversal - Swim, climb, vault, jump off or hoist up as you traverse the world seamlessly.
  • A Story Rich Adventure - Dozens of characters and story arcs will take you on a captivating journey.
  • A World You Can Touch - Need a change of pace? Go sailing, cooking, fishing or find a tavern to relax.

If you mainly want a visually distinctive adventure with familiar RPG rhythms, the favorable presentation may matter more than system depth. If you want combat that keeps expanding in complexity or a consistently strong narrative, the reviews offer reasons to be cautious.

Where can you play it, and are physical editions available?

The official FAQ lists PC (Steam and GOG), Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series, plus mobile through the App Store and Google Play. It also confirms physical editions through iam8bit and other retailers. Check the current listing for your platform and region for edition details and availability; stock and shipping are not established by the platform list.
