The announcement described a planned reduction, not a confirmed final tally of employees laid off. It was part of a wider restructuring of the company’s European business—not a new 2026 announcement.
What did SEGA announce, and when?
In a notice published March 28, 2024, SEGA SAMMY Holdings said its board had resolved structural-reform measures for the European region. The company wrote: “At the same time as we review the development structure and medium-term lineup, we decided to reduce headcount by approximately 240 roles at several bases in the European region with the aim of optimizing fixed expenses.” SEGA SAMMY’s March 28, 2024 announcement
The approximately 240 figure was the company’s estimate for the planned reduction. The notice does not establish how many employees ultimately left or whether every planned reduction was implemented.
Which SEGA studios or locations were affected?
The announcement refers to “several bases in the European region,” but does not give a site-by-site allocation in the passage reviewed. It therefore does not identify how many roles were planned to be reduced at any particular studio or location.

Why did SEGA say it was reducing roles?
SEGA SAMMY said the consumer-business environment, particularly in Europe, had changed rapidly. It cited a decline following the surge in stay-at-home demand during COVID-19 and economic weakness related to inflation, saying profitability had fallen. The company presented the measures as structural reform to adapt to those conditions and improve profitability. This is SEGA SAMMY’s stated rationale, not an independently established account of the causes.
How does the 2024 plan differ from SEGA’s earlier cuts?
SEGA SAMMY said approximately 250 roles had already been reduced in September 2023 after some projects at European bases were cancelled. That was a separate earlier action; it should not be conflated with the approximately 240-role plan announced in March 2024. The company described the September figure as reductions that had occurred, whereas the March figure was an announced plan.

What else was included in the restructuring?
The workforce plan was one part of a broader reform package. SEGA SAMMY also decided to transfer its shares in Relic Entertainment and review the medium-term lineup at European studios; the company said some titles in development would be written down. SEGA SAMMY’s notice on the wider reform measures
In the March 2024 notice, the company projected approximately ¥5.6 billion in work-in-progress write-downs to be recorded as cost of sales and approximately ¥6.2 billion in extraordinary losses for the fiscal year ending March 2024. It also forecast that the combined effect of reforms announced in September 2023 and March 2024 would curb annual cash outflow by approximately ¥10.0 billion. These were forecasts in the announcement, not confirmed realized results.

Is there a confirmed final layoff count?
The March 2024 announcement establishes the plan and its approximate scope, but not its final implementation count. The company’s announcement does not name affected employees or provide a studio-by-studio tally. Companies House filings for SEGA Europe Limited and later SEGA Careers listings do not resolve whether the plan was completed or how many employees were ultimately affected; job listings alone do not show that earlier reductions were reversed.
