But the launch announcement and the actual rollout were not identical: Rare temporarily disabled crouching, disguises, traps, and ledge hanging in the 3.2.0 update after finding high-impact issues, then documented later changes in November’s 3.2.1 notes.
What Season 14 added
Rare framed Season 14 as a stealth-and-mischief update, introducing tools for movement, distraction, and ambush rather than simply adding another combat weapon. Its October 17, 2024 announcement presented the Grapple Gun, blowpipe darts, crouching, disguises, and traps together. The subsequent patch notes matter, though: features announced for the season were not all continuously available from launch.

How the Grapple Gun works
The Grapple Gun was a loadout option intended for traversal and pulling. Rare’s Season 14 feature page called it “a new method of traversal to help adventurous pirates explore the Sea of Thieves.” It could pull loot or players toward the user, or propel the user toward a solid surface.
- Five arrowheads: The 3.2.0 notes specify five shots before reloading; Ammo Crates could replenish them.
- A loadout trade-off: Choosing it replaced a combat-focused weapon in one of the two loadout slots.
- Ship restrictions: From the sea, it could not grapple directly to a Sloop or Brigantine.
That makes the Grapple Gun a different kind of choice from the blowpipe: it offered mobility and a way to draw targets or loot closer, while the blowpipe’s darts were for attacks and distractions.

Crouching and disguises were stealth tools—with a launch caveat
Crouching was designed to make movement quieter. The Season 14 feature page also says crouched pirates move more slowly and cannot use weapons. Disguises let a pirate blend into the surroundings as an object such as a barrel or chest, though movement while disguised was slow. Commendations could unlock additional disguises.
These mechanics require a timeline qualification. Rare’s 3.2.0 release notes say crouching, disguises, traps, and hanging from ledges were temporarily disabled after potentially high-impact issues were found. The 3.2.1 notes in November describe stealth features being “finally unleashed in force” in that update and document disguise fixes, Commendation unlocks, and adjustments to ledge hanging. So it would be inaccurate to describe all of these mechanics as fully available without interruption from October 17.

Season progression and other features
The launch announcement offered 100 levels of Seasonal Renown, with cosmetics, gold, Doubloons, and Ancient Coins among the rewards. Commendations also provided a route to additional disguise and equipment cosmetics.
The Season 14 feature page described Merfruit as food that, when cooked, could temporarily dismiss nearby Merfolk. As with the other feature-page descriptions, that explains the season’s feature set; it does not establish that every mechanic remains unchanged in the live game today.
