To fight Second Sentinel, restore it in Cogwork Core with a Cogwork Heart, meet it during its patrols around the Citadel, then accept the Final Audience wish at Songclave. The duel takes place in High Halls. In the fight, prioritize reading its windups and avoiding follow-up attacks over chasing it; punish only when it leaves a safe opening.
How to unlock Final Audience
- Reach the dormant Sentinel in Cogwork Core. You need Double Jump to reach its room, according to Nintendo Life’s Second Sentinel guide.
- Collect three Cogwork Heart pieces. The pieces are found through bell puzzles in Whispering Vaults, Choral Chambers, and Memorium. Assemble them into the Cogwork Heart.
- Return to Cogwork Core and reactivate the Sentinel. Reach it and give it the completed heart.
- Encounter it on its Citadel duties. After reactivation, the Sentinel can be seen fighting enemies around Choral Chambers and elsewhere in the Citadel. The exact trigger for the next step is not clear in every guide, and you may need to encounter it more than once. The Hollow Knight Wiki’s entry lists more specific progression conditions: at least two meetings, or one meeting if you have Everbloom; at least two Songclave wishes, including Building Up Songclave; and Conductor’s Melody.
- Accept Final Audience at Songclave. Follow the wish marker to the duel room in the eastern, southeastern part of High Halls.
Where to fight Second Sentinel
The boss is not fought in Cogwork Core. That is where you find and restore the dormant automaton; the optional duel becomes available through Final Audience at Songclave and is held in High Halls. If the wish has not appeared after restoring the Sentinel, continue exploring the Citadel and completing the listed Songclave and progression requirements.

How to beat Second Sentinel
Second Sentinel changes position often and mixes grounded attacks with aerial moves. Stay ready for a second strike after dodging the first, and do not pursue it blindly when it jumps. The attack names below are convenient labels used by guides, not necessarily official move names; the wiki notes that some names are non-canon. These are guide-based tactics rather than independently verified guarantees.
Gilded Combo
The Sentinel lunges, then slashes, and its follow-up can vary or extend. Evade the lunge by getting behind it if you can, but keep moving: the first dodge does not necessarily end the sequence. Wait until the follow-up is finished before counterattacking.

Power Blade
A blade swing sends a wind projectile across the arena; the aerial version angles down toward you. Watch the projectile’s direction and evade its path rather than trying to attack through it. Reposition after it passes.
Scissor Strike
A charge-up signals a large X-shaped slash. Use the windup to make space, then avoid the attack before closing in. Do not treat the charge as an invitation to rush into its range.

Gilded Whirl
The Sentinel leaps and spins with its blades, sometimes chaining into more aerial attacks. A strategy guide recommends dashing underneath as the leap begins instead of challenging it in the air. Be prepared to evade again if it follows up.
Gilded Parry
When the Sentinel takes a defensive stance, hold your attack. Striking into the stance can trigger a dangerous counter, so wait for it to leave the position before looking for an opening.

Choosing safer attack windows
- Prefer patience to pursuit. Let the Sentinel finish its movement or combo before closing in; frequent repositioning makes chasing it a risky way to deal damage.
- Use windups to prepare, not to overcommit. The charge before Scissor Strike and the beginning of the aerial spin are cues to evade or create space, not guaranteed free hits.
- Keep aerial follow-ups in view. If it jumps, prioritize staying able to respond to another attack rather than trying to trade blows midair.
- Respect the parry stance. A defensive pose is a reason to stop attacking until the counter risk has passed.
Guides mention Cogfly and defensive tools as possible loadout choices, but no particular build is required by the available encounter guidance.
