The first Grand Theft Auto VI trailer gives Jason and Lucia a charged partnership, but it does not show a kiss. That gap is why some commentators say the trailer leaves the “video game kissing problem” unresolved: games can suggest intimacy without making an intimate moment feel convincing. It is a critical lens, not a technical diagnosis of Rockstar’s work—and the trailer cannot tell us what the finished game will show.
What the trailer shows—and what it doesn’t
Rockstar’s Trailer 1, dated December 4, 2023, presents Jason and Lucia as partners facing a criminal conspiracy in Leonida. Rockstar’s synopsis says they know the odds are against them, an easy score goes wrong, and they have to rely on each other. That establishes a consequential partnership, but the synopsis does not confirm a romance.

The trailer’s sensual imagery can invite viewers to read the relationship romantically. But suggestion is not the same as an on-screen kiss, and neither the trailer nor Rockstar’s official description establishes whether the completed game includes one. The title’s “kissing problem” is therefore best understood as commentary on what the trailer does not resolve, not a claim about the whole game.
What commentators mean by the “video game kissing problem”
In a February 19, 2026 article, GeekChamp argues that the trailer’s sensuality does not amount to a convincing display of intimate connection. Its discussion points to familiar hurdles in portraying a kiss: facial expression, lip contact, body positioning, clipping or stiffness, and the emotional context around the moment. Those are the article’s explanations for why game intimacy can look awkward; they are not confirmed statements from Rockstar or measured findings about the RAGE engine.

EGW-News made a related argument on May 7, 2025, interpreting a trailer cutaway before a kiss as avoidance. It also offered subjective impressions of kisses in Baldur’s Gate 3, Mass Effect, Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3, Horizon Forbidden West, and The Last of Us Part II. These examples illustrate how viewers debate staging and believability; they do not amount to a controlled comparison or an industry-wide verdict.
Why a believable kiss is more than lip contact
A kiss asks a game to coordinate close physical movement with facial performance and dramatic context. Viewers may notice misaligned contact, rigid posture, or an expression that does not fit the characters’ apparent feelings. Even technically smooth movement can feel unconvincing if the scene has not made the intimacy meaningful. These are useful ways to describe the criticism, not proof that any particular studio or engine cannot handle the scene.

Editing also shapes what an audience sees. A cutaway can leave viewers uncertain whether a kiss occurred, while a sustained shot exposes more of the animation and gives the moment room to land—or to feel awkward. That is one reason trailer snippets are limited evidence: they are edited for effect, not necessarily a complete representation of a scene in the game.

In its August 27, 2026 Newswire post, Rockstar describes its extended look as captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. The same post gives November 19, 2026, as the release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Those are Rockstar’s current stated details as of October 8, 2026; release plans can change.

Rockstar’s official pages reviewed do not say whether Jason and Lucia kiss, or how any such scene is staged. The game has not yet reached its stated release date, so the trailer-based criticism cannot settle what appears in the finished game. The official store listing reviewed describes a boxed code-in-box edition containing a download code rather than a disc; that listing is regional and may change.

How to read the criticism without overclaiming
- It is a critical phrase, not a formal diagnosis. “Video game kissing problem” describes perceived awkwardness or the absence of a believable kiss in commentary; it is not an established technical standard or industry measurement.
- A trailer is not the full story. It can suggest a relationship or omit an intimate beat without proving what the game contains.
- Animation criticism is interpretation. Facial movement, body positioning, and emotional context are plausible dimensions of the debate, but the cited commentary does not establish Rockstar’s production choices or technical limitations.
- Cross-game comparisons are subjective. The cited examples are commentators’ impressions, not a ranked or controlled evaluation of the games.
