Elden Ring took the No. 1 spot on Circana’s June 2024 U.S. best-selling games ranking, up from No. 8 in May. GamesBeat attributed the jump to the June 21 release of Shadow of the Erdtree, though the chart does not separate sales of the expansion from sales of the base game.
What changed in the June 2024 ranking?
In the June 2024 U.S. chart reproduced by GamesBeat from Circana data, Elden Ring, published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, ranked first. It had been eighth in May. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III ranked second, and Kingdom Hearts: Integrum Masterpiece ranked third. May’s No. 1, Ghost of Tsushima, fell to twelfth.

The chart entry was Elden Ring, not the expansion as a separate No. 1 title. GamesBeat reported that sales were boosted by the expansion’s launch; it did not quantify how much of the ranking came from base-game purchases versus expansion purchases. Windows Central separately reported that Circana’s Mat Piscatella described Elden Ring as the top seller on Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam. That is distinct from the broader U.S. chart ranking reproduced by GamesBeat.
Why did Shadow of the Erdtree matter?

Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware announced on June 27, 2024 that the expansion had passed 5 million units worldwide within three days of release. The announcement’s footnotes say the count included DLC and Steam downloads as well as purchases through several editions and bundles. It is a worldwide three-day milestone, so it should not be compared directly with Circana’s U.S. monthly ranking as though the figures measured the same market, period, or kind of sales.
How did the game’s result fit the wider U.S. market?

For the first half of 2024, U.S. video game spending reached $27.3 billion, up 1% from the first half of 2023, according to Mat Piscatella, Circana’s executive producer for games reports, as quoted by GamesBeat. The June decline and first-half growth describe different periods, so one does not cancel out the other.

The official Bandai Namco and FromSoftware announcement lists Shadow of the Erdtree for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Steam. The Elden Ring base game is required, and players must progress through it to a certain extent before they can start the expansion. Check that you own the base game and select the expansion for a compatible platform; the announcement does not establish current prices or retailer bundle contents.
