Shattered Space is Starfield’s story expansion about House Va’ruun and its hidden homeworld, Va’ruun’kai. To begin, complete the main quest mission “One Small Step,” then make a grav-jump to an orbit not already occupied by a mission or encounter. Bethesda recommends level 35 for the best experience, but that is guidance, not a required level gate.
What is Shattered Space?
Shattered Space is Starfield’s first major expansion, set on Va’ruun’kai, the homeworld of House Va’ruun. A massive vortex has devastated much of Dazra and thrown the House into chaos. The expansion follows the mystery of the vortex and the fate of House Va’ruun’s survivors. Bethesda describes it as a “fully handcrafted new location” where players can “unravel the mysteries surrounding the followers of the Great Serpent.” Bethesda’s launch guide was published September 27, 2024; its current expansion overview also highlights a new planet and unique weapons, spacesuits, and gear.
How to start the Shattered Space quest
- Complete “One Small Step,” the introductory mission in Starfield’s main quest.
- After completing it, make a grav-jump to an orbit that is not already occupied by a mission or encounter.
- Listen for the distress call. It leads to The Oracle, the star station that starts the expansion’s story.
Bethesda does not specify a particular system or route for triggering the call, so there is no need to target a named destination.
What level should you be?
Bethesda says any player can attempt the expansion and recommends level 35 for the best experience. Level 35 is not a mandatory unlock requirement; treat it as a difficulty guideline if you want to avoid entering the content underprepared.

Which editions include Shattered Space?
Entitlement depends on which edition or upgrade you own. Bethesda’s September 2024 launch guide says the Premium and Constellation editions include the expansion, while Standard Edition owners can buy the Digital Premium Upgrade. The same launch guide said Game Pass subscribers could upgrade to Premium for access. That notice describes the September 2024 Xbox Series X|S and PC launch context, not a complete statement of current platform availability.
