Escape from Tarkov’s PvE mode is not being removed or made free because of Nikita Buyanov’s poll. Insider Gaming reported on January 2, 2026, that Buyanov later described the poll as a joke aimed at people complaining about PvE and said the mode was not going anywhere. At the time of that report, 53.1% of roughly 17,000 voters favored free access and 29.4% favored deletion; those are publication-time figures, not a current tally. Insider Gaming’s report
What did the poll ask, and what did players choose?
Insider Gaming reported that Buyanov posted a poll with three options, including making PvE free or deleting it. The report gave the following results at publication:
- 53.1% of approximately 17,000 votes favored making PvE free.
- 29.4% favored deleting the mode.
These figures describe the tally reported on January 2, 2026. The poll was not presented as a formal product referendum, and the reported follow-up characterized it as a joke. The report reproduces Buyanov’s short post fragment, “this is it,” but that wording does not announce a policy change. Insider Gaming
Is Escape from Tarkov PvE currently free or at risk of deletion?
The poll is not evidence that Battlestate Games has decided to make PvE free or remove it. Insider Gaming reported Buyanov’s follow-up as saying the poll was a joke aimed at PvE critics and that the mode was not going anywhere. That is the report’s account of his response, not an independently verified current policy statement. Insider Gaming’s coverage

- Custom made based on beanie from Escape from Tarkov
- A great gift for the holidays or to add to your Tarkov collection
- Perfect for raiding!
The clearest purchase information in the available storefront listing is for Steam: PvE Zone is listed as downloadable content that requires Escape from Tarkov as the base game. The US listing checked displayed PvE Zone for $29.99 and a bundle containing it for $184.98. Storefront prices can change and differ by region, so those amounts should not be treated as universal or permanent. Steam: PvE Zone · Steam: The Unheard Edition bundle
Why has access to PvE been contentious?
Legacy edition expectations
Some players who bought the older Edge of Darkness edition expected access to PvE as part of its promised future content. In a 2024 statement on Battlestate Games’ official English Telegram channel, the studio distinguished its definition of downloadable content from PvE functionality and said the mode used separate network infrastructure. It said free access for Edge of Darkness owners would be rolled out in waves as server capacity allowed. Battlestate Games’ 2024 Telegram statement

- Excellent material and thickness.A great replica!
- Best choice for game fans, halloween cosplay prop and even cards collectors.

That statement records what the studio said at the time; it does not establish the current entitlement of every account. The same 2024 statement said mod support was planned after release, but it is not evidence of the present status of that plan.
Separate infrastructure and paid content
Battlestate cited server capacity as the reason access for eligible Edge of Darkness owners would be staged rather than immediate. The statement did not quantify operating costs. Separately, Steam now presents PvE Zone as paid add-on content requiring the base game, while its page for The Unheard Steam Edition lists Arena, PvE co-op mode, exclusive gear, and expanded stash among the edition’s inclusions. What would making PvE free—or deleting it—change?
The poll’s two headline options reflect different priorities, but the available evidence does not settle the trade-offs. Free access would remove the separate purchase barrier for players who want PvE, while raising the same capacity question Battlestate cited in 2024. Deleting the mode would eliminate that access and leave players who use PvE without it. The sources do not quantify infrastructure costs or establish how representative the poll was of the full player base.
The debate also includes a fairness question for owners of earlier editions: whether access expectations tied to those editions should be honored, and how the studio’s staged rollout commitment applies to individual accounts today. A humorous poll does not answer that question; players seeking an account-specific entitlement need current confirmation from Battlestate Games.
