What happens if you spare Papyrus?
Papyrus survives and lets you continue to Waterfall. Depending on your battle dialogue, he later invites you to hang out or go on a date. Befriending him is required for the True Pacifist route. Undertale Wiki’s Papyrus page documents these outcomes.
You do not have to defeat him to progress. In the ordinary fight, survive his final attack and he will spare you. After three defeats, he offers to let you skip the battle and proceed. The Papyrus page describes both ways forward.
What changes if you kill Papyrus?
Killing Papyrus changes later character interactions: Snowdin residents react to his absence, Papyrus does not speak to Undyne during their early encounter, and Sans is absent for much of the game until the Last Corridor. It removes Papyrus’s befriending event, so you cannot meet the True Pacifist requirement through him. The Papyrus page and the Neutral Route page describe these route effects.

This choice alone does not determine every Neutral ending. For example, the Family Ending requires befriending Papyrus and Undyne and killing no monsters. The Neutral Route page lists the relevant conditions.

Yes. On a Genocide Route attempt, Papyrus offers mercy immediately. Accepting it aborts the route. You can hang out with him afterward, but not go on a date; Sans appears at his Waterfall post, and earlier effects in Snowdin are not entirely undone. Papyrus warns, “IT FEELS… LIKE YOUR LIFE IS GOING DOWN A DANGEROUS PATH.” The Papyrus page records the route-specific dialogue and consequences.

Which choice should you make?
- Choose spare for an ordinary playthrough, Papyrus’s later scenes, or True Pacifist.
- Choose kill only if you knowingly want that branch’s consequences.
- On Genocide, do not accept Papyrus’s mercy if you intend to continue the route.
