What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use the enemy’s position and movement as your main aiming cue, while keeping the crosshair in view as the reference for alignment. That is a practical starting point, not a proven rule: the available FPS study did not directly compare looking at the enemy with looking at the crosshair.
What should you look at while aiming?
Attend to where the target is and how it is moving; use the crosshair to judge whether your shot is lined up. The crosshair is the aiming reference: it needs to overlap the target for a hit, but that does not mean you must consciously stare at it. Try to keep both target and reticle within your visual awareness rather than switching between them deliberately.
If you catch yourself monitoring your arm, wrist, or mouse instead of responding to what the target is doing, redirect your attention to the aiming outcome. This is a reasonable cue to try, not a guarantee that every player will aim better with it.
What does the FPS research actually show?
A 2023 PLOS ONE study by Ruben G. Lamers James and Akira R. O’Connor tested attentional focus in Aim Lab. Its 37 analyzed participants were PC FPS players with at least 200 hours of experience. They completed Circleshot, a continuous tracking task in which they followed a moving target and fired repeatedly. The researchers compared instructions to focus on the target with instructions to focus on arm and wrist movement—not visual fixation on the enemy versus the crosshair. Read the study.

- The durable, compact design with built-in nano receiver storage makes G305 not just a great portable desktop mouse, but also a great laptop travel companion, use with a gaming laptop and play anywhere
The study found no statistically significant main effect of attentional focus on overall performance, and no significant interaction between focus condition and experience group. In that task, target-directed attention did not show a statistically significant advantage over attention to body movement. More-experienced participants scored higher overall in this sample, but the result does not establish that experience itself caused better aim.
Because the experiment did not compare enemy fixation with crosshair fixation, it cannot settle the exact question of where a player should look. Nor does one continuous-tracking scenario establish a best focus for every FPS game or shot type.

Why aiming involves more than choosing one visual point
Aiming links what you see, the decisions you make, and your mouse movement. As NVIDIA Research explains, moving the mouse rotates the first-person camera, which changes the target’s visible position on screen. Its 2025 summary describes a model that reproduced several key behavior measures from 20 FPS players, including 10 professionals; it does not prescribe looking at either the target or reticle. Continuous tracking
When following a moving target, keep attention on its movement and use the crosshair to check alignment. The Aim Lab experiment is relevant to this kind of repeated-fire tracking, but its result does not prove that this cue outperforms crosshair focus.

Flicks, taps, and single shots
A quick flick or click-timed shot has a different timing demand from continuous tracking. The cited attention study did not test those situations, so treat target-focused attention as a starting cue rather than a research-backed prescription for every shot.
When you are thinking about your hand
If consciously controlling the mouse or arm is distracting you, shift attention toward the target and the intended shot. If that cue feels less natural or hurts consistency, adjust it; the evidence does not establish one universal fixation point.
