If you are already satisfied with a standard PS5, the upgrade is not automatic. In the U.S., Sony’s recommended price is now $899.99, effective April 2, 2026. That is $250 more than a PS5 and $300 more than a PS5 Digital Edition. The Pro is also disc-less, so physical-game owners should factor in the separate drive.
Six weeks of ownership can be a useful basis for a personal verdict, but the details matter: which games you played, which modes you used, and what display you played on. The guidance below separates those firsthand observations from Sony’s product claims, so you can apply the decision to your own setup.

What the PS5 Pro improves—and what it does not
The PS5 Pro is a more capable PS5 focused on graphics and performance headroom, not a new console generation with a guaranteed upgrade in every game. Sony says its hardware includes an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and AI-driven PSSR upscaling. At launch, Sony claimed up to 45% faster rendering compared with PS5; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent benchmark. Sony also described 67% more GPU Compute Units and 28% faster memory than PS5.
The key limitation is software support. Sony’s wording is explicit: “Features only available on select PS5 games that have been enhanced for PS5 Pro when compared with the PS5. PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.” A Pro may let a supported title combine higher visual quality with a smoother frame rate, but the exact improvements and available modes are determined by each game. It does not make every PS5 title look or run better in the same way.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

Is the PS5 Pro worth $899.99?
For U.S. buyers, Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 are:
| Console | U.S. recommended price | Difference from PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | — |
| PS5 | $649.99 | $250 less |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | $300 less |
These are U.S. recommended retail prices, not a promise of the price or availability at a particular retailer. Local pricing varies by region, and store prices may differ. Sony announced the prices on March 27, 2026; see its price-change notice.
The premium makes sense only if the improvements matter in the games you play. Start with your own library: check which titles carry the PS5 Pro Enhanced label, then look at what each title’s enhanced mode changes. A broad count of supported games is less useful than knowing whether the games you regularly play benefit in a way you will notice.

Who should buy it—and who should keep a standard PS5?
Buy the Pro if the upgrade matches your use
- You play several titles with PS5 Pro-enhanced features and want the image-quality or performance options they provide.
- You care enough about sharper-looking graphics, visual effects or smoother performance to pay the price difference.
- Your display and setup can take advantage of the modes you intend to use. Sony notes that some high-refresh-rate claims depend on the TV; 120 Hz is not guaranteed for every display or game. See Sony’s PS5 Pro Enhanced games information.
- You value the larger built-in storage: Sony’s safety guide lists a 2 TB custom SSD and an M.2 SSD expansion connector.
Keep your PS5 or choose the cheaper model if
- Your favorite games do not have enhanced features you care about, or their current presentation already satisfies you.
- You would rather put the $250–$300 U.S. price difference toward games or other priorities.
- You expect every PS5 title to gain the same visual or frame-rate improvement. That is not how Pro support works.
- You mainly want a console for 4K or 60 fps. Those outcomes are not guaranteed by buying a Pro; available resolution and frame-rate modes depend on the game and, for some high-refresh-rate features, the display.
What six weeks of ownership should tell you
A useful owner’s verdict should be tied to specific use rather than a general claim that the picture is “better.” If you have owned the console for six weeks, describe the games you played, the modes you selected, and the display you used. Say what changed for you—such as which visual or performance trade-off you preferred—and whether you noticed a difference during ordinary play.

Keep those observations distinct from manufacturer claims. Sony’s launch specifications describe the hardware and its stated capabilities; they do not establish that every player will see the same result in every game. For context on the launch support list, Sony announced more than 50 enhanced games in November 2024. That is a dated launch snapshot, not a current count. Sony’s November 2024 list is useful for understanding the launch lineup, but check current game information for titles you play now.

Physical games require a separate drive
The PS5 Pro is disc-less. Sony says the current PS5 Disc Drive can be purchased separately, so physical-game owners should include that additional purchase and the inconvenience of buying and attaching another accessory in their comparison. If you use only digital games, the missing built-in drive may not affect your decision.
There is room to expand storage
Sony’s PS5 Pro safety guide for model family CFI-71XX lists 2 TB of custom SSD storage and an M.2 SSD expansion connector. The guide does not establish a recommendation for any particular expansion drive. Before buying one, confirm the current compatibility and installation requirements for the specific model you are considering. The published specifications are in Sony’s PS5 Pro safety guide.
How PSSR support is changing
Sony announced an upgraded version of PSSR rolling out in March 2026 to a named set of games, including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Crimson Desert. Sony also described an optional system setting for existing supported games. The update can strengthen the Pro’s value for people who play supported titles, but support and results remain game-specific.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi said the upgraded PSSR restores fine detail such as character hair more naturally and reduces flickering and afterimage effects compared with the original PSSR. That is a developer’s assessment quoted by Sony, not an independent controlled comparison. Sony’s March 2026 PSSR announcement describes the rollout and named games.
Quick Recap
A practical buying check
- List the PS5 games you play most. Check each one for the PS5 Pro Enhanced label and identify what its enhanced mode actually offers.
- Decide what you want to improve. Is your priority image quality, visual effects or smoother performance? Do not assume one mode or frame rate is available in every title.
- Check your display. Confirm that your TV supports the features you intend to use; a console alone does not guarantee high-refresh-rate output.
- Compare the full cost. Use current prices in your region, and add the separate disc drive if you play physical games.
- Weigh the difference against your satisfaction today. If your current PS5 already gives you the experience you want, the Pro’s benefits may not justify the extra spend.
