Choose Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 for its prank-heavy story, international settings, and separate timed-goal Classic Mode. Choose Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland if you would rather explore a connected Los Angeles skate world, ride BMX, and build a skate park. That’s the clearest distinction in Activision’s launch descriptions; they don’t establish which game feels better to play.

Tony Hawk’s Underground 2: international stops and comic chaos
Activision’s October 4, 2004 launch announcement describes a humorous story led by Tony Hawk and Bam Margera, with pranks and international-city locations. The focus is on a comic, globe-spanning skating adventure rather than one continuous city.
Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland: a connected Los Angeles
In its October 18, 2005 launch announcement, Activision describes a young skater arriving in Los Angeles, earning the respect of established skaters, and constructing a skate park. The announcement emphasizes a continuous skate world, without loads or levels between areas.

Activision reported that Underground 2 received a 9.75 out of 10 from Game Informer in 2004. This is a publisher-reported score, and the cited announcement does not provide a comparable review statistic for American Wasteland; it is not a like-for-like basis for choosing between them.

Check the edition against your hardware
The games did not share exactly the same launch platform lineup. Activision listed Underground 2 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, PC, and Game Boy Advance. It listed American Wasteland for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube, with an Xbox 360 version to follow in November 2005.
If you’re buying a physical copy, confirm the platform and edition before ordering, then check the disc’s condition with the seller. These historical release announcements do not establish compatibility with modern consoles.

Which one should you get?
- Pick Underground 2 if timed Classic Mode goals, pranks, and international locations are your priorities.
- Pick American Wasteland if a connected Los Angeles setting, BMX, and building a skate park sound more appealing.
- If neither feature set decides it, choose based on the platform edition you can play. The launch descriptions alone can’t determine current used prices, the condition of a particular copy, or which game you’ll enjoy more.
