Which game makes the better first Sonic?

Is Sonic CD before Sonic 2 in the story?
Sonic Origins places Sonic CD before Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in its lineup. That is a clear order to follow if you want to play through the collection as presented. It does not, by itself, establish a definitive order for every interpretation of Sonic continuity; the official material cited here does not settle that broader timeline question.
Where can you play both?
SEGA’s announcement for Sonic Origins, published on April 21, 2022, lists both games in the collection and names Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms: SEGA’s release announcement. That announcement establishes the platforms named at launch, not current retailer stock or whether a particular edition or physical format is available now.
