Skyrim Anniversary Edition is worth buying if you want its bundled official quests, gear, homes, and gameplay additions—especially on Switch 2 for portable play. If you already own Special Edition, upgrade only when those extras justify the current price in your region. The bundle is not a new remaster of Skyrim’s core game, and Bethesda’s 2021 prices are not today’s prices.
What Anniversary Edition includes
Anniversary Edition combines Skyrim Special Edition with the Creation Club content included at the edition’s November 2021 launch. Bethesda says the bundle includes additional quests, armor, and gameplay modes; Bethesda Support describes 74 creations containing more than 500 individual elements. The PlayStation Store listing identifies the base game, the three official add-ons—Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn—and Creation Club content released on or before November 11, 2021. The additions cover categories such as homes, quests, armor, weapons, spells, dungeons, fishing, and Survival Mode. Some content named in the store listing is already part of Special Edition, so owners of that edition should think of Anniversary Edition as an added-content bundle—not as 74 entirely new experiences. It does not remake the core game. The Switch 2 release has platform-specific enhancements discussed below.
Is it worth buying for you?
If you are new to Skyrim
The full edition puts the base game, its three major add-ons, and a large collection of official extras together. It is a sensible pick if you want that full package and the current price premium over Special Edition is acceptable. If you mainly want the core game and expansions, compare the live price of Special Edition plus the applicable upgrade with the full Anniversary Edition price on your platform and in your region.

If you already own Special Edition
The Anniversary Upgrade adds the bundled Creation Club content; it is not the full game. Buy it if the quests, gear, homes, and gameplay additions appeal enough to justify the upgrade price currently shown by your store. Bethesda’s FAQ listed launch-era digital MSRPs of USD $49.99 for the full edition and USD $19.99 for the upgrade in 2021, while warning that pricing and availability varied by region and platform. Those figures are historical, not current prices.
If you play mainly on PC for mods
The evidence here does not establish whether Anniversary Edition is better or worse for a particular mod setup. Check the game version required by each mod, its dependencies, and the current community tools before changing editions or updating an existing installation. Do not buy the upgrade on the assumption that it is required for mods generally.
How the Switch 2 version holds up
TechRadar Hardware Editor Rhys Wood reviewed the Switch 2 edition in a review published January 17, 2026. He says he played for around 30 hours, including the main story, guild quests, and some expansion and Creation Club content. Why portable play is appealing
Wood reports crisp image quality in handheld and docked play and generally stable performance after patches addressed initial input latency. The review considers portability and having the official extras together strong reasons to consider this version. Bethesda also lists enhanced resolution, DLSS anti-aliasing, faster loading, mouse and motion-control support, Amiibo support, and Zelda-inspired gear among the Switch 2 edition’s features.

What to expect from performance and presentation
Wood reports a 30fps cap outdoors, variable frame rates indoors, blue-tinted distant foliage, and jittering water reflections. He also notes the lack of a field-of-view slider and broad accessibility settings. These are review findings specific to Switch 2; they should not be generalized to the PC, PlayStation, or Xbox versions.
Wood’s assessment is also that the underlying combat and story show their age, and that the added creations vary in quality: some houses impressed him, while some side quests did not. Treat those as one reviewer’s judgments rather than objective measures of every player’s experience.

Check the edition, platform, and format before buying
Full Anniversary Edition and Anniversary Upgrade are different purchases. Upgrade listings require the applicable base game, so check the listing for your platform before checkout. Prices, stock, entitlements, and physical formats can differ by platform and region.
Switch 2 ownership and pricing
Bethesda’s December 9, 2025 announcement listed $59.99 for the full Switch 2 edition, $19.99 for an upgrade from Switch Skyrim, and a free Switch 2 download for existing Switch Anniversary Edition owners. These are announcement-era prices and entitlements, not a guarantee of today’s eShop offer; confirm the live listing for your region. Bethesda says existing owners of a physical Switch game must access the upgrade through the in-game menu. A physical code-in-box version was also announced.
Older physical editions and next-generation upgrades
Bethesda’s 2021 FAQ says PS4 and Xbox One physical copies include a disc, with an internet download required to redeem the Creation Club content. The same FAQ says Special Edition and Anniversary Edition owners on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S receive a free next-generation upgrade with enhanced graphics, faster loading, and more. It says achievement or trophy progress carries over from Special Edition except when upgrading from PS4 to PS5. Treat these as the FAQ’s stated terms and verify current store and platform rules for your purchase.
Verdict
For a new player, Anniversary Edition is the convenient complete package if the current price is close enough to Special Edition plus upgrade to make the extras worthwhile. For an existing Special Edition owner, the upgrade is a selective add-on, not an essential second purchase: decide based on the specific creations you want and the live upgrade price. On Switch 2, portability and clear image quality make a strong case, balanced by the performance and visual drawbacks reported in the review.
