The first four main Elder Scrolls games also span 12 years by release year: Arena arrived in 1994 and Oblivion in 2006. That is a release span—not evidence that Bethesda spent 12 years developing them.
When did Skyrim come out, and when was its 13th anniversary?
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released on November 11, 2011. Bethesda’s 2021 FAQ marked November 11 as ten years since the game’s release, confirming the anniversary date; the 13th anniversary was November 11, 2024. The “turns 13” framing is therefore a November 2024 milestone, not Skyrim’s age today.
Bethesda identifies Skyrim as the series’ fifth main entry. Its official studio history places the game in the sequence that followed Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion: Bethesda’s game history. The anniversary timing is also reflected in Bethesda’s Skyrim anniversary FAQ.
How long was the release span for the first four Elder Scrolls games?
Arena was released in 1994 and Oblivion in 2006, making the release-year span 12 years (2006 minus 1994). Bethesda’s retrospective and studio history establish those release years, but they do not establish that the games collectively spent 12 years in production. The accurate description is a 12-year span between the first and fourth games’ release years.

| Main game | Release year | Gap from previous entry |
|---|---|---|
| Arena | 1994 | — |
| Daggerfall | 1996 | 2 years |
| Morrowind | 2002 | 6 years |
| Oblivion | 2006 | 4 years |
The gaps are calculated from Bethesda’s listed release years. They describe time between releases, not active development time, project overlap, or the time individual developers spent on each game. Bethesda’s 25th-anniversary retrospective and studio game history provide the dates.
What the release gaps do—and don’t—say about the series
The early cadence was uneven: Daggerfall followed Arena by two years, Morrowind followed six years later, and Oblivion arrived four years after Morrowind. That sequence is useful for understanding how the release schedule changed across the first four entries, but release dates alone cannot tell us how long each game took to make.

Bethesda’s 2019 retrospective recalls that fewer than ten people were working on the series when Bruce Nesmith first worked on it. That is Nesmith’s retrospective estimate, not a precise staffing record for every game or development period. In the same retrospective, Todd Howard described the creative moment of seeing a game come together: “Each game has that moment where you work and work, and then you see it pop off the screen and you’re like, ‘that’s it – that’s the magic.’”

Bethesda’s current studio page describes The Elder Scrolls VI as the next chapter in the series, lists its anticipated release date as “To be announced,” and says the project is in preproduction. Those statements do not support a reliable prediction about when the game will ship: Bethesda’s studio page.
