The main early reason to wait is Horn Attack at level 22; at that same level, Nidoking learns Thrash. The right timing depends on which move you want and how soon you want to use Nidoking. Learnsets vary by game, so check your version before using this advice.
What changes when Nidorino evolves?
In FireRed and LeafGreen, using a Moon Stone evolves Nidorino into Nidoking. The choice is therefore whether to use the stone now or keep Nidorino unevolved for a particular move. The available move data does not establish one universally best timing; it comes down to the moves you want and when you want Nidoking available.

When should you use the Moon Stone in FireRed or LeafGreen?
| Timing | What you get | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| After Double Kick | You can use Nidoking sooner rather than waiting for a later Nidorino move. | You do not specifically want one of Nidorino’s later moves. This is the practical default suggested in the cited community discussion. |
| At level 22 | Nidorino learns Horn Attack, and Nidoking learns Thrash at level 22. | You want Horn Attack as an option before evolving, while also taking advantage of Nidoking’s level-22 move. |
| After a later Nidorino move | The FireRed learnset lists Fury Attack at level 34, Flatter at level 43, and Horn Drill at level 53. | You specifically want one of those moves and are willing to wait longer to evolve. |
Is Horn Attack worth waiting for?
Wait until level 22 if you want Nidorino to learn Horn Attack before you use the Moon Stone. If you would rather have Nidoking earlier, the cited community advice recommends evolving after Double Kick. Since Nidoking learns Thrash at level 22 in these games, waiting to that level also lines up with a move for the evolved Pokémon.
Should you wait for Fury Attack, Flatter, or Horn Drill?
FireRed’s Nidorino learnset includes Fury Attack at level 34, Flatter at level 43, and Horn Drill at level 53. Those are reasons to delay evolution only if you personally want one of them; the move data does not make their value a universal rule. Nidoking learns Megahorn at level 43 in FireRed and LeafGreen, another move to consider when comparing the timing.

Does this advice apply to every Pokémon game?
No. The level and move details here are specific to FireRed and LeafGreen. If you are playing another Pokémon title, use that game’s Nidorino and Nidoking learnsets to decide when to evolve. The title alone does not identify a version.
